DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us in-person or virtually Wednesday\, April 13th to learn more about Lake Mendota’s storied history of research and challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE APRIL CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nLake Mendota is a beloved resource for thousands of people\, but many don’t know that it has a rich history of testing scientific hypotheses. Often cited as the most studied lake in the world\, it has been researched extensively since the 1880’s. This talk will chronologically cover how Lake Mendota has undergone large shifts in its food web and water quality over the last several decades. It will also incorporate current research to better understand the current state of the lake in anticipation for what the future might hold. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nBen Martin is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he works with Jake Vander Zanden on understanding food web ecology of lake ecosystems. Ben has been focused on synthesizing large-scale food web shifts in lakes in northern Wisconsin\, the Madison lakes\, and the Great Lakes. Ben has been very encouraged since moving to Madison from Pennsylvania as the Madison community has shown great interest in science\, especially when it involves our lakes. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. A special thanks to Fields Auto for sponsoring guest parking for this event! \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarie Raboin is the owner of Brix Cider in Mount Horeb and a Grazing Specialist with the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. She will discuss sustainable farming and how the farm-to-table movement is a way to strengthen rural communities. \nRaboin has been working in sustainable agriculture for over 15 years. She spent ten years with the Natural Resources Conservation service\, two years directing an NGO in Sub-Saharan Africa\, and three years in the agronomy department at UW-Madison before moving to Dane County Land Conservation. In 2017 Marie and her husband started Brix Cider LLC\, a locally grown and locally produced hard cider company and farm-to-table restaurant in Mount Horeb. They source raw ingredients for both the cider and the restaurant from farmers in and around Dane County who practice regenerative and sustainable agriculture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristy Remucal leads the Aquatic Chemistry group at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison and is the Director of the Water Science and Engineering Laboratory. She is a faculty member in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering\, the Environmental Chemistry & Technology Program\, and the Limnology & Marine Science Program. She will discuss her lake research on addressing water quality challenges in Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nRemucal holds an MS (2004) and a PhD (2009) in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and a BS (2003) in Environmental Engineering Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining the UW-Madison faculty\, Christy completed a post-doc in the Institute for Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarrie Sanders is the CEO of Hope Community Capital and a faculty member of the Social Innovation & Sustainability Leadership (SISL) Graduate Program at Edgewood College. She will discuss opportunities for sustainability in community development. \n\n\n\nSanders is a community development consultant\, teacher\, lifelong learner\, and social innovator who seeks to cultivate equitable\, sustainable communities through community development finance aimed at supporting people\, projects\, and organizations that advance well-being for all. After 15 years in various roles focused on community development and social innovation\, Carrie knows that for an outcome to be equitable and effective it has to be not only rooted in\, but driven by those who will be impacted the most. \n\n\n\nShe received undergraduate training at William Jewell College with degrees in music and political science and received a graduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology earning a master’s in City Planning with focus on community development finance. Carrie enjoys seeing a project through to the end and is especially energized to have the opportunity to walk alongside a visionary leader to drive implementation of systems-level\, social change projects. Her favorite spot to enjoy Madison’s beautiful lakes is Warner Beach. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaddie McLean (moderator) is a meteorologist on News 3 Now This Morning on WISC-TV. She is an AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and has forecasted southern Wisconsin’s weather for the last 20 years. Haddie lives in Madison with her husband and three children. She loves to experiment with new recipes in the kitchen on her quest to get her children to LIKE healthy foods. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThe event is held at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Dane County Executive Joe Parisi
DESCRIPTION:Impacts of Conservation and Legacy Sediment on Water Quality within the Dorn Creek Watershed \nConservation efforts have been occurring for decades throughout the County and the Yahara to help reduce the amount of agricultural nonpoint pollution entering nearby streams\, rivers\, and lakes. Although these efforts have helped\, the overall goal of meeting the state’s water quality criterion for many of these waterbodies has not occurred. Dane County in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have been investigating instream legacy sediments as a potential signficant source of nonpoint pollution and water quality impairment within the Dorn Creek watershed located on the northern side of Lake Mendota. Although extensive conservation systems have been implemented to improve water quality within the Dorn Creek watershed legacy sediments appear to be working against these improvements. \nKyle Minks and John Reimer of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department will give the talk. \nLearn more about the project:Dane County press release | Map of streams | Overview with photos \nVisit the green tickets link below to learn more and register.

DESCRIPTION:“The past\, present\, and future of invasive species in Madison’s lakes”\nAbout the talk\nInvasive species change our lakes. While not without its success stories – as in the case of the common carp removal in Lake Wingra that improved water quality – Madison has faced\, and will continue to face\, many challenges posed by aquatic invasive species. Water quality in Lake Mendota has been degraded by the invasive spiny water flea’s voracious predation on Daphnia. At this moment\, Eurasian Water Milfoil blankets the shores of Lake Monona. Last year\, UW’s limnology class discovered low densities of zebra mussels in Lake Mendota\, which can fundamentally change lakes when abundant. Nonetheless\, preventing future invasions\, such as Asian Carp\, remains one of the most effective ways Madisonians can protect their lakes. As each of these invasive species compound current management challenges\, such as agricultural runoff\, their futures will help set the stage for water quality in Madison’s lakes. \nAbout our speaker\nJake is a freshwater ecologist currently working as a researcher at the UW Center for Limnology. Jake received his BS at Hamline University in St. Paul\, MN\, and recently defended his PhD thesis here at UW-Madison. Jake’s work has focused on the ecological and economic impacts of the invasive spiny water flea in Lake Mendota\, highlighting the extreme costs associated with degraded water quality due to the invasion. Jake has been motivated by the intersection between the ecology of lakes and the people who care about them\, making aquatic invasive species a perfect sandbox to explore and teach about – both formally in the classroom and informally around the midwest – the natural world and our place in it.
