SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Paul Hanson
DESCRIPTION:Lake Mendota Phosphorus and Our Water Quality Woes\n\n\n\nJoin us at Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about important issues impacting our lakes! \n\n\n\nREGISTER TODAY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the talk\n\n\n\nLake Mendota is a beautiful and beloved waterbody in the Greater Madison Area. Thanks to the UW Center for Limnology\, Lake Mendota has been called the most studied lake in the U.S. \n\n\n\nBelow the surface\, Lake Mendota is a dynamic and ever-changing ecosystem. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Dr. Paul Hanson about the phosphorus dynamics in Lake Mendota and how machine learning can help us better understand the linkages between human decision making and water quality. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a deeper dive into Lake Mendota! \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Paul C. Hanson is a Distinguished Professor of Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Limnology. Dr. Hanson studies lakes and reservoirs as ecosystems embedded in human\, landscape\, and climate contexts. His work has focused on issues of water quality and how lakes and their services respond to nutrient and carbon inputs from their watershed.  Through computer simulations\, Dr. Hanson recreates the patterns observed in aquatic systems\, and links those patterns to our understanding of the way the bio-physical world works. \n\n\n\nHis research has led to quantification of the roles that lakes and reservoirs play in the global carbon cycle\, new understanding of the linkages between human decision making and water quality\, and advancements in water quality prediction through numerical simulation and machine learning. This research has been applied to lakes and reservoirs around the world through his leadership in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON). \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis event is at The Edgewater. Come at 7:30 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and to enjoy your coffee\, pastries\, and fruit. The program begins at 8 a.m.\, and class is dismissed by 9 a.m. Complimentary event parking will be available at The Edgewater. \n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE for Friends of Clean Lakes. If you are not a Friend\, admission is $10 per event. Registration for each event is requested for all attendees. \n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 Science Café\n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Karen Oberhauser
DESCRIPTION:Monarch Butterfly Conservation: An “All Hands on Deck” Approach for a Flagship Insect\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\nJoin us for Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nOur Yahara Lakes are part of a dynamic and interconnected ecosystem. As a result\, the pressures that impact water quality also affect our lands\, wildlife\, and even insects! \n\n\n\nAt this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, Karen Oberhauser of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss declining Monarch butterfly populations and the “all hands on deck” approach needed for conservation. Through intentional habitat restoration\, we can help increase the number of Monarchs and improve water quality in our lakes. Join us to learn how life in flight and life on the lakes are intrinsically connected! \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nKaren Oberhauser is the Director of the UW-Madison Arboretum. She and her students have conducted research on several aspects of monarch butterfly ecology. Her research depends on traditional lab and field techniques\, as well as the contributions of a variety of audiences through citizen science. Her strong interest in promoting a citizenry with a high degree of scientific and environmental literacy led to the development of a science education program that involves courses for teachers\, and opportunities for youth\, to engage in research and share their findings with broad audiences. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, she started a nationwide Citizen Science project called the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project\, which continues to engage hundreds of volunteers throughout North America. Oberhauser has authored over 90 papers on her research on monarchs\, insect conservation\, and citizen science. Her new job at the Arboretum blends her work on habitat conservation\, public outreach\, and citizen science research. \n\n\n\nOberhauser is passionate about the conservation of the world’s biodiversity\, and believes that the connections her projects promote between monarchs\, humans\, and the natural world promote meaningful conservation action. She is the chair of the Monarch Joint Venture\, and a founding officer of the Monarch Butterfly Fund. In 2013\, Oberhauser received a White House Champion of Change award for her work with Citizen Science. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThe event is held at The Edgewater. Come at 7:30 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and to enjoy coffee\, pastries\, and fruit. \n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. \n\n\n\nThe series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies\, with presenting sponsors First Weber Foundation and Johnson Financial Group\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater Madison\, supporting sponsor National Guardian Life Insurance Company\, and media partner the Isthmus.

SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Hilary Dugan
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101: Salt and our freshwater lakes\nREGISTER TODAY \n\nAbout the talk\nRoad salt is often thought of as an ‘environmentally safe’ chemical. However\, at high concentrations\, chloride can alter aquatic ecosystems by stressing freshwater species\, and deteriorate drinking water sources. For 70+ years\, we have applied road salt (sodium chloride) to paved surfaces\, without any regard for the environmental consequences. \nIn this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, Hilary Dugan will discuss long-term chloride trends and the state of our lakes across the Midwest and Northeast United States with regard to chloride contamination. We’ll also learn what is currently being done locally to curtail further environmental damage. \nAbout our speaker\nHilary Dugan is an assistant professor at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. As a limnologist\, Hilary studies how terrestrial and atmospheric changes\, such as warming air temperatures or land use patterns\, alter biogeochemical fluxes and aquatic processes in lakes. Her research balances field based programs\, which rely heavily on sensor networks\, with the use and development of analytical models\, and the application of geophysical and geospatial tools. Her research focus is on temperate and polar lakes\, with sites spanning from Wisconsin to Antarctica. \nOne of Hilary’s recent research projects examined long-term chloride trends in over 500 lakes in North America and Europe. She found that many urban lakes in North America have undergone considerable long-term salinization stemming from road salt application. \nEvent Details\nThis event is at The Edgewater. Come at 7:30 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and to enjoy your coffee\, pastries\, and fruit. The program begins at 8 a.m.\, and class is dismissed by 9 a.m. Complimentary event parking will be available at The Edgewater. \nAdmission is FREE for 2019 Friends of Clean Lakes. If you are not a Friend\, admission is $10 per event. Registration for each event is requested for all attendees.
