SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Changing How We See Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, January 12th to hear from Igor Mrdjen as he discusses research to better monitor and study harmful algal blooms. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, several advancements in harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring approaches and technologies have expanded scientists’ and regulators’ ability to monitor and study algal blooms. BloomOptix is a start-up focused on innovating how we monitor and study HABs by leveraging emerging technologies and methods. The company began in 2019\, using advanced sensors and drone technologies to study HABs and water quality phenomena around New York State. In 2021\, BloomOptix launched a new product which uses artificial intelligence and digital microscopy to identify and quantify HAB-causing cyanobacteria in water samples. This presentation will detail past and present BloomOptix projects including use of drones for HAB studies\, artificial intelligence and how these technologies can help empower decision makers\, safety personnel\, and citizen scientists. \n\n\n\nThis past summer\, Clean Lakes Alliance volunteers participated in this long-distance collaboration. Equipped with portable digital microscopes generously shipped all the way from London company Iolight\, volunteers collected microscopic images of algae and cyanobacteria cells. These images are being used to train an AI mobile app to quickly differentiate between harmless green algae and toxin producing cyanobacteria. \n\n\n\nMeet our Speaker\n\n\n\nAs an innovator within Ramboll\, Igor Mrdjen is currently leading BloomOptix\, a team focused on using technology to change how we monitor algal blooms. Through innovation\, BloomOptix is developing an AI-assisted cyanobacteria monitoring tool\, methods for drone-based hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing of harmful algal blooms\, sediment plumes and various factors impacting water quality\, and introduced new technologies such as submersible ROVs to increase water work safety at Ramboll. \n\n\n\nIgor has a widely interdisciplinary research background in Environmental Health Sciences. He has led\, designed\, and conducted research on various water quality and health phenomena including: microcystin toxicity and carcinogenicity in mammalian models; ecological and health impacts of harmful algal blooms; role of microplastics in toxicology; microbial source tracking of fecal contaminants; and development of novel remote sensing methods for imaging of terrestrial and aquatic phenomena. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us online on Wednesday\, December 8th to hear from two UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering senior Capstone teams as they present their culminating designs for two lake-friendly improvement projects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nSince 2016\, Clean Lakes Alliance has worked in partnership with the UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department to support student capstone projects focused on designing more accessible and lake-friendly parks\, beaches\, and community spaces. Senior Capstone Design is a required course for all civil and environmental engineers at UW-Madison and serves as the culminating work of their undergraduate degrees. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes Alliance\, along with CG Schmidt\, is proud to be a sponsoring partner of these student capstone projects. While Clean Lakes Alliance serves as a “client”\, the students work diligently all semester to apply their acquired expertise to inspire the community through unique project designs that advocate for healthy lakes and beaches. With 48% of the shoreline owned by the public and 25 beaches in the Greater Madison area\, this is an excellent avenue to elevate a variety of project opportunities for the students and the community. In this month’s Clean Lakes 101\, you’ll be presented two unique projects in the Madison area: \n\n\n\nPlaenert Drive/Wingra Creek RevitalizationJohn Nolen Drive Redesign\n\n\n\nProject Details\n\n\n\nProject 1: Plaenert Drive/Wingra Creek Revitalization \n\n\n\nThis project is located along Wingra Creek in southern Madison\, Wisconsin. The creek is bounded to the north and south by W. Wingra Drive and Plaenert Drive\, and Fish Hatchery Road and S. Park Street to the west and east. To highlight the importance of waterways within the heart of Greater Madison\, the creation of an inclusive and inviting greenspace and park setting is the focus of this project. By providing an alternative route design for Plaenert Drive\, this allows for development of a park setting on the south side of Wingra Creek. \n\n\n\nThis project aims to improve and protect Madison’s water resources while involving the community in its development. Phosphorus reduction is at the forefront in enhancing water resources and continuing to establish Madison as a ‘green city’. Enhancing water quality\, sustainably protecting the shoreline\, improving access\, and improving placemaking of the region is incorporated into every aspect of the project design. This region will provide a space for the community and environment to seamlessly interact by featuring many amenities including a viewing platform over Wingra Creek\, pedestrian path\, and non-motorized boat launch for creek access. \n\n\n\nProject 2: John Nolen Drive Redesign \n\n\n\nJohn Nolen Drive across Lake Monona serves as the primary gateway to downtown Madison. To reflect the significance of the causeway\, our objectives are to improve recreation opportunities for users\, manage runoff to minimize negative impacts of stormwater\, address shoreline erosion from waves\, and improve aesthetics and landscaping along the causeway. Our designs seek to improve water quality\, increase sustainability and access\, and to enhance placemaking. The improvements for the bike and pedestrian path will create a significant positive recreational impact on the community’s transportation network and remind users that Greater Madison values green infrastructure and the lakes. \n\n\n\nThe bike and pedestrian path final design includes a 16 ft wide pedestrian boardwalk stretching the southern half of the existing bike and pedestrian pathway\, use of recycled materials\, and the inclusion of several surface level and underground stormwater management techniques. Alongside the boardwalk there is a two-lane bike path\, two 225 sq ft outlook points along the boardwalk\, and a 625 sq ft capital outlook point. In addition to the boardwalk\, this alternative includes amenities such as bike racks\, benches\, emergency call boxes\, signage\, local art\, coastline steps for increased erosion control and recreational use\, and landscaping. \n\n\n\nDesign images of Project 1 and 2 respectively seen below: \n\n\n\nPlaenert Drive and Wingra Creek Revitalization\n\n\n\nJohn Nolen Drive Redesign\n\n\n\nMeet the Students\n\n\n\nChase Cummings is graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has worked as a Civil Engineering Intern for HNTB and has focused on field inspection and plan design. After graduation\, he will work for HNTB in Madison\, Wisconsin as a Field Engineer. \n\n\n\nMichael VerVelde is graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with Certificates in both Business and Entrepreneurship. He has worked as a Civil Construction Field Management Intern for Bechtel on two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia and expanding the AT&T 5G system in Northern California. After graduation\, he intends to continue working for Bechtel as a Civil Field Engineer either nationally or abroad. \n\n\n\nNora Rickman is graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a certificate in Sustainability. She worked as a Civil Engineering Intern for MSA Professional Services and focused on field and office work on road reconstruction and greenfield development projects. After graduation\, she will work for MSA Professional Services in Marshfield\, Wisconsin as a Civil Engineer. \n\n\n\nMatthew Humbert will be graduating in May 2022 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Science in both geological engineering and geology and geophysics. Matt has first-hand experience working in an agricultural research setting collecting data and preparing lab tests. After graduation Matt plans on working in the geotechnical field on issues involving water resources and sustainability. \n\n\n\nRiley Hughes is a geological engineering student graduating in the spring of 2022 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in science in Geological Engineering\, a major in Geology and Geophysics\, and a certificate in Engineering Energy and Sustainability. She has prior internship experience working as a geotechnical/field engineer working across the United States on preliminary and final wind and solar investigations. She will begin working full time with Westwood Professional Services in Westminster\, CO starting July 2022. \n\n\n\nFreddy Koth is a civil engineering student graduating in the fall of 2021 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in science in Civil Engineering with an option in Environmental Engineering. He has prior internship experience as a field inspector and project designer on WisDOT transportation construction projects. He will begin working full time with DARR Engineering in Wausau\, WI starting January 2022. \n\n\n\nBrandon Hungelmann-Skiba is a civil engineering student graduating in the spring of 2022 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in science in Civil Engineering with an option in Environmental Engineering and an additional major in Economics. He has prior internship experience as a pavement inspector and technician performing work on reports for the DOT and FAA. He will begin full time with Applied Pavement Technology in Waunakee\, WI starting January 2022. \n\n\n\nJordan Nolle is a civil engineering student graduating in the spring of 2022 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in science in Civil Engineering. He has prior experience working as a field technician to perform lead contamination tests\, both in soil and in groundwater. Jordan will begin working full time in Madison\, WI starting June 2022. \n\n\n\nLauren Kinchla is a civil engineering student graduating in the fall of 2021 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s in science in Civil Engineering and a certificate in Environmental Studies. She has experience in property management from her internship in Boston\, MA. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, November 10th to learn about ways that you can help create more resilient landscapes in our communities. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, November 10th to hear Katie Richgels discuss actionable ways for residents to reduce stormwater runoff from reaching the lakes. Land use and climate impacts\, such as heavy rain and runoff\, and other headwinds threaten our progress toward healthy lakes. Fortunately\, you don’t need to live on the lakes to make a difference in our Yahara Watershed. Many small actions can make our landscape more resilient and add up to big impacts for water quality. \n\n\n\nOur speaker will cover how stormwater from the Madison Metro area impacts the Yahara Watershed and provide some practical strategies for reducing runoff and capturing stormwater where we live. From complex water mitigation installations such as swales and rain gardens\, to simple redirection of downspouts and collection of leaf litter\, we’ll highlight the many large and small ways you can reduce your impacts and contribute to sustainability of our lakes for many generations to come. Let’s challenge each other to change just one thing\, because together we can have a positive impact on the issues affecting our watershed. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nKatie Richgels earned her PhD in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Colorado and completed her undergraduate degree in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin. She studied aquatic ecosystems and amphibian malformations for her thesis\, and now manages a team of scientists who investigate wildlife disease outbreaks for a federal agency. She has taught introductory biology\, biology for non-scientists\, and parasitology at the University of Colorado\, and currently is a recurring guest lecturer in the University of Wisconsin wildlife diseases course. Currently\, she is the Chief of the Ecology and Epidemiology Branch at the National Wildlife Health Center of the USGS. She is a mom of two\, avid natives gardener\, and all around lover of the natural world. She began volunteering her time and expertise for The608.org in January of 2021\, with a series of prerecorded informational talks called “Living Among Lakes”\, which has provided a connection to the community of lake enthusiasts in Madison and a space where we can learn from one another. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us via Zoom on Wednesday\, October 20th to learn more about ongoing efforts to improve the condition and usability of our lakes and beaches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the October Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe Yahara River Watershed contributes significantly to the region’s economic vitality and quality of life. Despite years of investment in water quality improvements\, the watershed’s five lakes remain highly eutrophic\, and intensifying climate impacts threaten to further deteriorate water quality. \n\n\n\nThe Yahara CLEAN Compact\, a diverse coalition of 19 organizations and agencies\, seeks to improve and protect regional water quality by strengthening community partnerships and uniting around shared\, measurable goals. This presentation by the consultant team of SmithGroup and Urban Assets will describe the process and recommendations of the Yahara CLEAN Compact’s 3.0 Plan\, a strategic playbook developed through community input for reducing phosphorus and bacteria in the lakes. \n\n\n\nThe plan outlines a comprehensive series of strategies to improve water quality and defines key roles and responsibilities of various landowners and managers within the watershed for contributing to healthier lakes. Everyone has a role to play. Register for this presentation to learn what you can do to restore cleaner lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCassie Goodwin is a principal civil engineer at SmithGroup who is passionate about sustainable infrastructure and making positive impacts on people’s lives. She is a skilled facilitator and communicator and has a passion for transformational projects that lie at the intersection of social justice and complex water issues. Cassie has presented about water quality and infrastructure at several conferences including the Clean Rivers Alliance\, Navigating the Future of Water\, Wisconsin ASLA and Marina Dock Age. She is the co-author of the nationally award-winning University of Wisconsin-Madison Green Infrastructure Master Plan. \n\n\n\nJacob (J.) Blue is a landscape architect and ecologist at SmithGroup with more than 20 years of experience. He is co-author of the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES)\, the Sustainable SITES Handbook\, and was a subject-matter expert for the US Green Building Council’s SITES-AP exam. His work is focused on planning and designing places at the intersection of the built environment and natural systems. He has often been a presenter at national and international conferences including the national ASLA\, APA\, Greater and Greener\, and National Disaster Recovery Conferences and he has twice been an invited speaker on behalf of the US Ambassador to Chile. When not at work\, Jacob is an off-the-grid\, sustainable farmer. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, August 11th to hear about a new program designed to assist farmers in their efforts of environmental stewardship. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, August 11th for “Farm\, Energy\, Water\, & Carbon Markets\,” sponsored by Virent. We’ll hear Tim Baye and Jessica Niekrasz discuss efforts to develop programming that supports Wisconsin farm carbon management initiatives. Wisconsin Legislative leadership with contributions across the stakeholder spectrum have recently launched an investigation of a comprehensive Farm/Energy/Water/Carbon policy program. The essence of the project is to establish or expand voluntary\, market-driven options for animal agriculture operations’ to more effectively and aggressively manage their farm’s carbon footprint. Components of the project include carbon accounting\, electricity\, nutrient management\, building market-place for lower carbon inputs\, carbon offsets and carbon labeling. \n\n\n\nThis project promotes and supports measuring\, managing\, and monetizing the value of carbon at the farm. Valuing what’s already accomplished\, integrating assets and practices to reduce carbon intensity\, and add (sometimes significantly) to the bottom-line while addressing risks (compliance\, price\, and technical). Using Wisconsin animal enterprises as an initial “targeted” industry\, the program intends to demonstrate that by using off-the-shelf technology and proven practices\, farmers can move to optimize financial benefits from decreasing the carbon intensity of their products. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nTim Baye is a Professor of Business Development/Energy Finance & State Energy Specialist\, University of Wisconsin. His research and educational programs serve energy industry executives\, professionals\, and policy leaders. He has over 30 years of experience in industrial renewable energy projects and policy\, in education\, executive\, and advisory capacities. \n\n\n\nJessica Niekrasz has years of experience in biogas\, water quality\, and related fields\, as well as an understanding of the regulatory environment that exists today in Wisconsin. She helps companies and organizations connect with potential partners and decision makers to better understand the landscape and grow the business. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about the state of the science behind water quality in the Yahara lakes. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nAs part of the ongoing efforts of the Yahara CLEAN Compact\, technical experts are evaluating and summarizing the fundamental concepts behind the water quality challenges facing the Yahara lakes. Through this expanded Yahara CLEAN Compact\, we will account for accomplishments and progress to date\, reevaluate phosphorus reduction targets\, and set forth revised strategies\, costs\, and timelines to complete the needed work. Our overarching goal is to remove our five lakes and nine public beaches from the federally impaired waters list. At the same time\, we will promote a culture of watershed sustainability that will benefit this and future generations. \n\n\n\nThe Yahara CLEAN Compact is currently updating our community’s strategy for cleaning up the Yahara lakes. An effective strategy requires an understanding of the state of the science about water quality\, including goals for the lakes\, progress toward those goals\, and which actions have been most effective so far and promise to be most effective in the future. This presentation will summarize the work of the Yahara CLEAN lake science team seeking answers to these questions. \n\n\n\nYahara CLEAN Compact Background \n\n\n\nThe Yahara River Watershed and its five lakes define Dane County and Greater Madison’s sense of place. Lakes Mendota\, Monona\, Wingra\, Waubesa\, and Kegonsa contribute significantly to the region’s economic vitality\, recreational offerings\, and local quality of life. Clean and healthy lakes are truly the benchmark of a healthy community. Large investments over the years have laid the foundation for future water quality improvements. However\, our lakes remain federally impaired with intensifying climate impacts\, such as heavy rain and runoff\, and other headwinds threatening our progress. The Yahara CLEAN Compact seeks to improve the condition and usability of our lakes and beaches. It will do this by expanding and strengthening the community partnership to clean up our lakes\, and unite around a common vision and action plan to which we can be accountable. Ultimately\, it is a promise to cooperatively deliver bold solutions and actionable timelines that will improve water quality in our five Greater Madison lakes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nMatt Diebel is Watershed Management Coordinator for Dane County Land & Water Resources Department\, where he develops watershed management tools\, programs and policies\, and evaluates water quality trends. He previously worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in the water quality and research programs. Matt has a BA in biology from Colorado College and a MS in water resources management and a PhD in limnology from UW-Madison. \n\n\n\nDr. Richard Lathrop has been working on Yahara lake water quality issues since 1975\, first on a two-year federally funded project\, then for the next 33 years as a research limnologist for the Wisconsin DNR. Besides his Yahara lakes research that led to a mid-career PhD from UW-Madison\, Dick has led other successful restoration projects including removing phosphorus by bottom water withdrawal from Devil’s Lake and removing carp from Lake Wingra. After retiring from the WDNR\, Dick continues to work and volunteer on various water-related projects\, including the UW’s North-Temperate Lakes Long-Term Ecological Research project through his Honorary Fellowship appointment at the UW Center for Limnology. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101: Healthy Land\, Healthy Lakes\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about some of the ongoing lake improvement initiatives spearheaded by Dane County. \n  \nRegister for Clean Lakes 101 \n  \nAbout this Talk\nIn this month’s talk\, we’ll hear from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and key staff members John Reimer and Kathy Kuntz as they review some of Dane County’s ongoing lake improvement initiatives in the Yahara Watershed. The Dane County Land and Water Resources Department leads and collaborates with organizations and agencies on innovative watershed scale approaches to improve water quality. These approaches vary in size and scope and include new technologies\, research\, and partnerships. \nSuck the Muck: Breakthrough research in 2014 by Dane County in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR)\, discovered that phosphorus concentrations in the stream sediments of Dorn Creek (northeast of Lake Mendota) are seven times greater than nearby crop fields. Much of the stream sediment is known as legacy sediment\, deposits formed by erosion from farm fields accumulating over decades of farming. In the case of Dorn Creek\, this sediment has existed since the late 1800s. For Lake Mendota\, if the accrued legacy sediment remains at the bottom of the streams\, it was calculated that it would take almost 100 years for the phosphorus to continue to leach out of the sediments and enter the lake. In order to reduce phosphorus concentrations and improve water quality decades sooner than 100 years\, Dane County developed an innovative project to remove the phosphorus-laden sediment from the streambeds within the Yahara Watershed. \nYahara River Sediment Removal: Currently\, water comes into the Yahara lakes faster than it goes out. Therefore\, after repetitive and heavy rainfall events\, the lake levels increase and can lead to flooding. The efficient movement of water through each lake is undermined by sediment build-up in the Yahara River. While sediment movement is a naturally occurring process\, the accumulation of sediment in the Yahara River and lakes is greatly increased by human activity\, including urban development and winter sand operations. Today\, two inches of rain takes more than two weeks to leave the Yahara lakes system due to its sluggish nature. \nLand Preservation: Dane County Parks has more than 12\,000 acres of land that staff\, volunteers\, and partner organizations work to protect\, improve\, and restore. These restoration efforts include seed collection\, controlled burns\, forestry management\, invasive species control\, and land purchases. \nClimate Change: In April 2020\, Dane County issued an ambitious and comprehensive economy-wide climate action plan (CAP). The CAP lays out strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sources by 50% by 2030 with the ultimate aim of net zero emissions by 2050. Benefits of achieving CAP objectives go beyond climate—many of the strategies outlined in the CAP also yield substantial benefits to our lakes. \nAbout our Speakers\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Joe sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Joe was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after six years in the State Assembly and eight years as Dane County Clerk. Joe’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Joe dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Joe believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \nKathy Kuntz\, CC-P\, is the Director of the Dane County Office of Energy & Climate Change. Kathy has more than 25 years of experience influencing consumers\, businesses\, and whole communities to adopt sustainable practices and technologies. Her work spans energy and water efficiency\, transportation\, waste reduction\, beneficial electrification\, and renewable energy. Prior to joining Dane County Kathy led Cool Choices\, a nonprofit that worked with businesses and local governments to encourage sustainable practices.Prior to that\, Kathy led Focus on Energy\, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency and renewable energy program. \nJohn Reimer (Dane County) is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. He specializes in water resources engineering and management. His areas of expertise include water level management\, flood assessment\, lake and river restoration\, and stormwater management. Things are no different for the creatures in the Yahara lakes. Pike\, panfish\, plants\, and invertebrates all go to great lengths to find love\, but take wildly different approaches. What makes each strategy successful\, and why? \nDuring the “Love in the Lakes” presentation\, you’ll learn about the mating and reproductive strategies of several important species\, which range from the heartwarming to the bizarre. \nAbout our Speaker\nJustin Chenevert (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources) began his career in water resources hauling laundry baskets of invasive weeds from the muddy Charles River in Boston\, MA. Despite the smell\, he found he loved working with water\, and moved to Madison in 2013 to pursue a master’s degree in Water Resources Management from UW-Madison. Justin worked for Clean Lakes Alliance from 2014 – 2016 in several capacities\, including surveying lake users\, supporting the volunteer water quality monitoring program\, and analyzing water quality data. He is currently employed by the Department of Natural Resources in the Water Monitoring section\, where he works on a variety of projects related to lake water quality\, ecology\, and citizen science. DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes and hear a brief welcome from City of Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway! \n  \nRegister for Yahara Lakes 101 \n\n  \n\nAbout this Talk \nIn this month’s talk\, we’ll hear from MSA Senior Landscape Architect Dan Williams and City of Madison Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp as they provide an update on the re-envisioning of Vilas Park\, located on the northern shore of Lake Wingra. The Vilas Park Master Plan will be a framework plan that will help to inform improvements at the park over the next 15-20 years. \nVilas Park was a gift to the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association from William and Anna Vilas in 1904. The MPPDA hired famed landscape gardener (landscape architect) O.C. Simonds to design the iconic park. Simonds’ design called for the dredging of a mostly boggy site along the shores of Lake Wingra to create a lagoon and usable park land. During the same period\, Simonds designed Tenney Park creating the anchor parks of Madison Park and Pleasure Drive. \nToday\, after more than one hundred years\, Vilas Park is experiencing its first large-scale master planning effort. Several plans and park improvements have occurred over time but the current plan encompasses in-depth research of the environs and a robust public engagement process. As a waterfront park\, much of the discussion has been focused on the effect on Lake Wingra’s watershed\, shoreline\, and the lagoon within the park. Other features such as the Native American Mounds enlighten users on the protection of culturally sensitive resources. The presentation will highlight the original ideas and design principles of O.C. Simonds and how current community desires and trends shape a plan for the future with an eye to the past. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\nBeginning with an introduction from City of Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway \nDan Williams (MSA) With more than 30 years of landscape architectural experience\, Dan takes pride in his ability to make every project\, large or small\, something special. He is energized by the challenges offered by each new site. Dan’s design philosophy is uncomplicated and based on two foundational factors: understanding and vision. Understanding involves developing a solid comprehension of the environmental\, social\, and economic factors related to a project. This knowledge provides a framework for building an inspiring vision for the landscape. \nEric Knepp (City of Madison) has been the Madison Parks Superintendent since 2014. As Superintendent\, he has worked with the community to invest in facilities and partnerships that improve connection to the public’s waterfront. DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101 – A New Vision for the Yahara River Estuary\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \nRegister for Yahara Lakes 101 \nAbout this Talk\nIn this presentation\, we’ll hear from representatives of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department\, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR)\, UW-Madison\, City of Madison\, and the Town of Westport as they work together to create a long-term vision for a portion of the Cherokee-Yahara River Estuary.  \nThe approximately 670-acre project area represents the primary inlet of water into Lake Mendota and is designated an Area of Special Natural Resource Interest (ASNRI) by the WDNR. Located on the north side of Lake Mendota\, stakeholders seek to develop a long-term rehabilitation plan that will enhance (i) recreation\, (ii) fisheries and wildlife\, (iii) water quality and vegetation\, and (iv) erosion and sediment trapping in the estuary. Key efforts include dedicated outreach initiatives such as public meetings\, online surveys\, and workshops to better understand local needs. Our speakers will report results from the joint effort and outcomes of the public engagement process.  \nAbout our Speakers\nJohn Reimer (Dane County) is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. He specializes in water resources engineering and management. His areas of expertise include water level management\, flood assessment\, lake and river restoration\, and stormwater management. He enjoys communicating complex water resource information and is dedicated to improving Dane County’s resilience to flooding and water quality problems.  \nChin Wu (UW-Madison) is a Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also a faculty member of the Limnology and Marine Science\, and Geological Engineering Programs. His research areas include coastal sustainability\, wetland and lake restoration\, water safety\, and flood assessment and mitigation in the Yahara River chain of lakes. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and is devoted to addressing challenges of water resources science/engineering interacting with human activities under a changing climate. \nEric Knepp (City of Madison) has been the Madison Parks Superintendent since 2014. As Superintendent\, he has worked with the community to invest in facilities and partnerships that improve connection to the public’s waterfront. Eric regularly engages with our lakes by swimming\, fishing\, kayaking\, and spending time at the shoreline with his wife\, two kids\, and dog.  \nDavid Rowe (WDNR) is a native of Middleton\, Wisconsin\, and has completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from UW-Madison\, Bachelor of Science Education in Biology from UW-Oshkosh\, and a Masters in Fisheries Biology from Iowa State University. He began his career with the WDNR in 1998 as a Fisheries Research Technician and has held positions as Fisheries Management Technician in Antigo\, and as Fisheries Biologist in Green Bay. Currently\, David is the Fisheries Team Supervisor for the Fitchburg Fisheries Team and responsible for WDNR fisheries management in Columbia\, Dane\, Grant\, Green\, Iowa\, Lafayette\, Richland\, Rock\, and Sauk Counties.  \nEvent Details\nThis event will be held online via Zoom.
