SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Love in the Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about the relationships and reproductive habits of some of our most common underwater dwellers. Justin Chenevert from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is returning for one of our most popular talks: Love in the Lakes. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnter your information in the box below to register\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nOrganisms across the globe are faced with the same dilemma – how to pass on their genes to the next generation and give their youngsters the best possible chance at success. Things are no different for the creatures in the Yahara lakes. Pike\, panfish\, plants\, and invertebrates all go to great lengths to propagate\, but take wildly different approaches. What makes each strategy successful\, and why? During this presentation\, you’ll learn about the mating and reproductive strategies of several important species\, which range from the heartwarming… to the bizarre. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nJustin Chenevert (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources) began his career in water resources by removing invasive plants from the Charles River outside of Boston\, MA. Soon enough he found himself in Madison completing the Water Resources Management master’s program at UW. Justin worked for Clean Lakes Alliance from 2014 – 2016\, supporting the volunteer water quality monitoring program and analyzing water quality data. He is currently employed by the Department of Natural Resources in the Monitoring section of the Water Quality Bureau\, where he works on a variety of projects related to lake water quality\, ecology\, and citizen science. In his free time\, Justin enjoys ice fishing and paddling on the Madison lakes and beyond. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. Complimentary event parking will be available at The Edgewater parking ramp. Parking spots fill up quickly and may be limited depending on hotel capacity. \n\n\n\nA Zoom link will be sent to all registrants via the confirmation email. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. The series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and UW-Extension Lakes\, with presenting sponsor National Guardian Life Insurance Company\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, supporting sponsor Johnson Financial Group\, and media sponsor WKOW. Additional support is provided by Alliant Energy Foundation\, Hovde Properties\, and Perkins Coie LLP.

SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: What's Under the Ice?
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us\, along with TEMPO Madison\, for this in-person science café and happy hour on Monday\, January 29th\, 2024\, from 4 – 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnter your information in the box below to register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Science Café\n\n\n\nMost lakes in Wisconsin are frozen for 3-5 months per year. Have you ever wondered what happens in lakes in the winter? Scientists from UW–Madison’s Center for Limnology will discuss how lakes function after they freeze over. Learn about the unique physics\, chemistry\, and biology of our lakes during this fascinating time of the year\, and what a warming climate means for the future of Wisconsin’s lakes. \n\n\n\n“Frozen Lakes” 101 is produced in partnership with TEMPO Madison\, which is dedicated to shaping the climate and culture of our community by allowing future generations of women to succeed. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHilary Dugan\n\n\n\nHilary Dugan is an associate professor at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a limnologist\, Hilary studies how terrestrial and atmospheric changes\, such as warming air temperatures or land use patterns\, alter biogeochemical fluxes and aquatic processes in lakes. Her research balances field-based programs\, which rely heavily on sensor networks\, with the use and development of analytical models\, and the application of geophysical and geospatial tools. Her research focus is on temperate and polar lakes\, with sites spanning from Wisconsin to Antarctica. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZach Feiner\n\n\n\nZach Feiner is a research scientist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Zach’s research focuses on fisheries ecology and management\, including the impacts of climate change on freshwater fish and fisheries\, the effects of angler behavior and fisheries harvest on ecological and evolutionary processes in fish populations\, and the importance of changing phenology to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.  He primarily works in temperate lakes and the Laurentian Great Lakes\, combining field research with quantitative analysis and modeling of region- and continent-wide fisheries datasets. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis in-person “Frozen Lakes” 101 Science Café will be held in The Edgewater’s Grand Ballroom (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703\, Level 5). Doors open at 3:30 p.m. The program runs from 4 – 5 p.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. \n\n\n\nParticipants are then invited to join the Ice Happy Hour and enjoy a complimentary drink in The Edgewater’s Augie’s Tavern from 5 – 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nAbout Ice Happy Hour\n\n\n\nEnjoy socializing and networking at Augie’s Tavern after “Frozen Lakes” 101 from 5 – 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nComplimentary event parking will be available at The Edgewater parking ramp. Parking spots fill up quickly and may be limited depending on hotel capacity. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Overcoming Barriers to Local Water Quality Progress
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this Clean Lakes 101 on Wednesday\, November 8th to hear about progress being made to improve water quality in the Yahara Watershed. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nWhat is needed to make substantial progress on improving water quality in the Yahara Watershed? Many amazing people and partnerships are working hard on this immense challenge. Eric will focus this talk on two aspects that are starting to enter more into the water quality conversation and how they can be implemented: 1) balancing the watershed phosphorus budget and 2) increasing perennial agroecosystems. Reducing the supply of phosphorus that is available for transport from land to water is critical for long-term success. Recent progress in dairy nutrition and manure export are helping but we still have room for improvement. As a complementary approach\, increasing the number of acres devoted to perennial agroecosystems – such as well-managed\, rotational grazing of dairy heifers – can prevent existing phosphorus in watershed soils from being transported downstream while providing many other benefits. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Booth\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Booth is an associate research scientist at UW-Madison in the Departments of Plant & Agroecosystem Sciences and Civil & Environmental Engineering. He holds a BS in environmental engineering from UW-Madison (2004)\, MS in hydrologic science from UC-Davis (2006)\, and PhD in limnology from UW-Madison (2011). His disciplinary background has water as a centerpiece and includes topics such as hydroecology\, impacts of climate and land-use change\, urban stormwater management\, wetland/stream restoration\, water quality\, groundwater hydrology\, fluvial geomorphology\, environmental history\, agroecology\, remote sensing\, and numerical modeling. In addition\, Eric also served as an official delegate to Clean Lakes Alliance’s Yahara CLEAN Compact that produced RENEW THE BLUE: A Community Guide for Cleaner Lakes & Beaches in the Yahara Watershed and has contributed to many State of the Lakes reports for the organization.  \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). The series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and UW-Extension Lakes\, with presenting sponsor First Weber Foundation\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, supporting sponsors National Guardian Life Insurance Company and Alliant Energy\, and media sponsor WKOW.

SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Healthy Lakes\, Healthy Climate
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to hear about Dane County’s many projects to keep our lakes clean and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nHear from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Laura Hicklin\, Director of Dane County’s Land & Water Resources Department as they describe the County’s many projects to keep our lakes clean and mitigate the impacts of climate change. From more extreme weather with increased rain in the spring\, to dryer\, hotter summers and winters\, the risks of climate change become clearer all time. These changes are exacerbating existing threats to the Yahara lakes\, such as increased phosphorus runoff. \n\n\n\nDuring this presentation\, you’ll learn the latest information about specific projects that advance Renew the Blue such as Suck the Muck\, manure treatment\, and conservation cover programs\, along with updates on aquatic plant management\, lake levels\, Yahara River sediment removal\, and the ongoing efforts to combat climate change. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDane County Executive: Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. He sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Joe was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. Joe’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. Now Joe believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. Joe and his wife\, Erin Thornley Parisi\, raised their two daughters on Madison’s east side. With a population of more than 500\,000 and an annual county budget of $600 million\, Dane is Wisconsin’s second largest county. Dane County has the highest private sector job and population growth in Wisconsin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Hicklin: Laura Hicklin is the Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. The Land & Water Resources Department protects and enhances the natural\, cultural\, and historic resources of Dane County; provides the County’s residents with a broad array of accessible\, high quality resource-based recreational services and facilities; and supports residents\, communities\, local governments\, and other agencies and organizations in their resource management and protection activities. Laura’s goal is to bring civility to challenging discussions about natural resource management in Dane County. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Investigating Glacial Lake Yahara
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about the existence and demise of glacial Lake Yahara. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nFollowing the retreat of the last glaciers from Wisconsin a glacial lake formed along the retreating ice margin in the Madison area. Known as glacial Lake Yahara\, this lake covered the footprint of the modern four lakes of Madison at a slightly higher lake level and persisted for several thousand years following local deglaciation. \n\n\n\nIn conjunction with research into a nearby\, former glacial lake in Dodge and Jefferson counties\, a series of sediment cores was collected from low-lying marshes in the Madison area. These targeted locations would have been inundated by glacial Lake Yahara but exposed as the lake level eventually fell. The cores provide chronologic and environmental data on the existence and demise of this lake. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nEric Carson is a research geologist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; he is also currently serving as Interim Director and State Geologist for the WGNHS. He received his B.S. (Geology) from West Virginia University\, and both his M.S. (Geology) and Ph.D. (double major\, Geology and Geography) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has 20 years’ experience in academia and research. His research at the WGNHS investigates the timing of the last glaciation in Wisconsin\, processes associated with rivers and flooding\, and how landscapes evolve over timescales ranging from thousands to tens of millions of years. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Beach Testing on the Yahara Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about how water quality is monitored at beaches within Dane County. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nEvery summer\, staff from Public Health Madison & Dane County take on the task of monitoring area beaches. Samples are collected and brought back to the lab for testing. Staff test for bacteria and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). It’s these test results that decide if a beach is open or closed for swimming. Closures are updated online and signs posted at the beach to warn people to stay out of the water when bacteria or cyanobacteria levels are high. This presentation will highlight the importance of recreational water quality monitoring and take you through a day at the beach from sample collection to sample results. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nJennifer Lavender Braun serves at the lead microbiologist for Public Health Madison & Dane County. In this role\, Jennifer oversees microbiology testing for drinking water\, swim and whirl pools\, and Dane County beaches. Prior to her current position\, Jennifer worked at the US EPA National Exposure Research Lab in Cincinnati\, OH and the City of Racine Health Department Lab. At the US EPA\, Jennifer worked on the National Epidemiological and Environmental Assessment of Recreational Water. This study helped inform the 2012 updated recreational water quality standards that factored in the use of newer rapid methods. During her time in Racine\, Jennifer worked on method development for one of these rapid method\, qPCR\, which is now the standard test method for beaches in that area. Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics\, and a Master of Science in Applied Molecular Biology\, both from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101 - From Waste to Worth: Phosphorus Recovery and Reuse
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about how phosphorus recovered from wastewater not only benefits our local waterways\, but can be reused within the food system. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nPhosphorus is an essential nutrient. Every day people consume phosphorus as part of their diet and in products they use. Eventually some of this phosphorus becomes waste and ends up in wastewater. Most wastewater in the Madison area is reclaimed by the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District\, where phosphorus is recovered for beneficial reuse within the food system. This presentation will explain how the District recovers nutrients like phosphorus from wastewater for beneficial reuse while working to protect local water resources.  \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nMatt Seib serves as the process and research engineer at the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District. In this role\, Matt is involved in several areas of the District\, including daily operations\, innovation\, planning studies\, and capital improvements projects. He also partners with faculty at the University of Wisconsin focused on wastewater technology and resource recovery research. Matt is involved in several water industry advocacy organizations such as the Water Environment Federation and Water Research Foundation. He holds a PhD from Marquette University in civil engineering with a specialization in anaerobic biotechnology and also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali\, working on community water and sanitation development efforts.

Both canoes are now undergoing a three-year preservation process at the State Historical Preservation Facility. Dr. James Skibo will discuss the discovery\, recovery\, preservation\, and ongoing research related to these finds. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. James M. Skibo is the Wisconsin State Archaeologist at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
