SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: The Lake Mendota Dugout Canoe Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, March 8th to learn about the discovery of ancient native canoes in Lake Mendota. Choose from an in-person or virtual hybrid edition of this Clean Lakes 101 presentation. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Maritime Archaeologist Tamara Thomsen found a dugout canoe in Lake Mendota that dated to AD 800. Its recovery that year made international news\, and it was selected as one of the top 10 archaeological discoveries in 2021. In 2022\, another canoe was found in the same location and this one dates to 1\,000 BC\, making it the oldest canoe in the Great Lakes Region. Both canoes are now undergoing a three-year preservation process at the State Historical Preservation Facility. Dr. James Skibo will discuss the discovery\, recovery\, preservation\, and ongoing research related to these finds. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. James M. Skibo is the Wisconsin State Archaeologist at the Wisconsin Historical Society. As the people’s archaeologist he is responsible for using the state’s 36\,000 archaeological sites to tell our rich history. Prior to this appointment he was a Distinguished Professor at Illinois State University where he wrote or edited 11 books and dozens of peer reviewed articles on pottery\, archaeological theory\, and the archaeology of the Great Lakes. He has worked in the Philippines\, the American Southwest\, and for 20 years on the south shore of LakeSuperior. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. Complimentary event parking will be available at The Edgewater parking ramp. Parking spots fill up quickly and may be limited depending on hotel capacity. \n\n\n\nA Zoom link will be sent to all registrants via the Eventbrite confirmation email. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. The series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and UW-Extension Lakes\, with presenting sponsor First Weber Foundation\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, supporting sponsors National Guardian Life Insurance Company and Alliant Energy\, and media sponsor WKOW.

SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101 - Native Seeds for the Future: Dane County's Seed Program
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this VIRTUAL EDITION of Clean Lakes 101 on Wednesday\, November 9\, 2022. Register below to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\nAll Clean Lakes 101 events are free to Friends of Clean Lakes Alliance. Friends are individuals that support our lakes annually with a tax-deductible donation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe Dane County Park System manages over 17\,000 acres of land that staff\, volunteers\, and partner organizations work to protect\, improve\, and restore. Among that total acreage exists a scattering of robust tallgrass prairies\, a critical habitat for wildlife and a water quality benefit for our lakes. Prairies are native to the state of Wisconsin and have evolved here alongside native wildlife and pollinators. Prairies perform ecosystem services like managing rainfall by increasing infiltration\, which is crucial for plant growth and resupplying groundwater. Many prairie plants have long\, deep roots\, which prevent soil erosion that would otherwise bring nutrients like phosphorus into our lakes. \n\n\n\nTo support existing prairies and establish new ones\, native seeds are in high demand. In 2021\, the total collected seeds had an estimated value of well over $1\,000\,000 and will be used to restore hundreds of acres of land. Without the support from volunteers\, this level of restoration would not be possible. This presentation will showcase the Dane County Park’s native seed program and take the audience through every step of the process from seed collection to planting and everything in between. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nLars Higdon has been the Botanist/Naturalist with Dane County Parks since 2016. He enjoys working closely with a large workforce of volunteers to restore prairies\, savannas\, and woodlands across dozens of parks and project sites throughout the park system. Lars has worked in multiple capacities managing and restoring natural communities in Wisconsin as well as southern California. Lars holds a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event has been changed to ONLY VIRTUAL. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR “LAKE MONONA WATERFRONT DESIGN CHALLENGE”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe City of Madison has embarked on an exciting public-private partnership to re-envision the Lake Monona shoreline adjacent to downtown Madison and extending to the south side. As the first stage of this project\, the City is sponsoring a design challenge in which leading national landscape design firms are competing to receive a $75\,000 stipend–funded equally by the City and the nonprofit Friends of Nolen Waterfront Inc.–to prepare a conceptual master plan for a shoreline park from Machinery Row to Olin Park. Fourteen firms have responded to a Request for Qualifications. The Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Advisory committee\, which is comprised of thirteen community members\, will select three firms to submit conceptual master plans\, from which the committee will recommend one firm to contract with the city to prepare a detailed master plan of the proposed park. Allen Arntsen\, who chairs the committee\, and Mike Sturm\, who is the principal staff for the committee\, will provide an overview of this Design Challenge effort and the Lake Monona Waterfront planning process. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nAllen Arntsen is the Chair of the City of Madison Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Advisory Committee\, which has been charged with selecting a consultant to prepare a master plan for the Lake Monona Waterfront extending from Machinery Row to Olin Park. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: "Suck the Muck" at Sixmile Creek
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is taking a field trip to learn more about Dane County’s signature Suck the Muck effort to remove legacy sediment. Register today to join us on Monday\, August 22nd for this educational event at Sixmile Creek with Dane County Executive Joe Parisi. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE “SUCK THE MUCK” FIELD TRIP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nDane County’s “Suck the Muck” project has received a lot of exciting attention over the past few years for its legacy sediment removal in Dorn Creek and Token Creek. Now on the third phase of the project\, Dane County will begin the work in Sixmile Creek. It is estimated that approximately 25\,000 tons (or about 1\,800 dump truck loads) of material will be removed from this section of Sixmile Creek\, including an estimated 60\,000 pounds of phosphorus contained in the accumulated sediment. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Clean Lakes 101 field trip edition\, we’ll hear an update from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Assistant Director of Land and Water Resources John Reimer about the project. Attendees will get to see the phosphorus-laden sediment islands firsthand and learn about the removal process. Ultimately\, this project is currently estimated to divert thousands of pounds of phosphorus from entering our lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Parisi sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. He was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. \n\n\n\nParisi’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Parisi dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Parisi believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \n\n\n\nJohn Reimer is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. His technical background has focused on modeling and analysis of watersheds\, rivers\, and lakes. Reimer is responsible for lake level management\, including aquatic plant harvesting and operation of the three dams in the Yahara chain of lakes. \n\n\n\nEvent Details: Field Trip Edition!\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at Sixmile Creek. (5656 Enchanted View Lane\, Waunakee)This event is held at North Mendota Natural Resource Area near Sixmile Creek (see map below). Check in will open at 4:00 p.m. with a presentation and walking tour from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Please review the following details regarding the event: \n\n\n\nThe event will be held at an outdoor worksite on grassy\, uneven terrain. Walking will be required to reach the presentation site.Attendees should dress for the weather. Long light layers are recommended to protect against sun\, scratches\, and bugs/ticks.The event will be held rain or shine. No rain date is scheduled. Cancellation due to severe inclement weather would be communicated via email day-of.Parking is available at multiple spots at North Mendota Natural Resource Area but may require a short walk to the meeting location.Bathrooms are not readily available at the site. The Kwik Trip on Hwy M\, approximately 2 miles away\, is the nearest drivable restroom.\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE for all attendees. Online registration is requested.  \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE “SUCK THE MUCK” FIELD TRIP TO SIXMILE CREEK\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Suck the Muck” field trip location\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Efforts have since expanded to include a fleet of 12 aquatic plant harvesters and various equipment. However\, rapid plant growth and changing public expectations continue to present ongoing challenges. Effective aquatic plant management is a difficult balance between sometimes competing factors\, such as public safety\, recreational opportunity\, a healthy aquatic ecosystem\, and cost. \n\n\n\nToday\, Dane County’s mechanical harvesting program focuses on two priority areas. The first priority is to target plant growth occurring within the Yahara River. Excessive plant growth restricts water flow moving through the Yahara chain of lakes\, creating challenges to maintain lake levels with the Wisconsin DNR water level orders. The second priority is to mitigate recreational impairment by removing invasive aquatic weeds. Additionally\, there are often public misunderstandings related to where and when aquatic plant harvesting is allowed. In this talk\, we will discuss regulatory requirements\, locations of harvesting\, and impacts to the local fishery. Information on data collection and the five-year permitting process will also be described. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nPete Jopke is a 1990 graduate of UW-LaCrosse and has spent time with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, Sauk County\, and\, for the last 26 years\, with the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department. His entire 31-year career in natural resources has been centered on water. In addition to working with the aquatic plant program\, he also serves as the County’s Aquatic Species Coordinator and assists with all things lakes and rivers. An avid angler\, you will often catch him throughout the year pursuing his finned friends. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about research to predict summertime algal abundance. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR “SEASON-AHEAD ALGAL BLOOM FORECASTING”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nIn recent decades\, cultural eutrophication of coastal waters and inland lakes around the world has contributed to a rapid expansion of harmful cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Potential outbreaks of toxin-producing cyanobacteria species have drawn concern from health officials and water managers given their negative ecological\, aesthetic\, and socioeconomic impacts. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, little information regarding expected summertime cyanobacteria abundance is available prior to the season. With sufficient lead time\, communicating the likelihood of elevated cyanobacteria abundance may be informative for proactively managing potential threats to lake and beach safety. We developed a model to issue predictions in early June of expected summertime cyanobacteria abundance for Lake Mendota. The prediction model demonstrates moderate to good skill and an ability to accurately predict summers with above-normal cyanobacteria abundance. Associated beach closure predictions also show promise but are highly sensitive to the short observational record – a limitation directly being addressed by Clean Lakes Alliance volunteer monitors and researchers at UW-Madison. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Paul Block is an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research focuses on hydroclimatology and water resources systems\, with a goal to couple climate\, hydrology\, and management models and knowledge to reduce risks and promote sustainability of water resources for societal benefit. He is involved in many national and international projects that promote season-ahead forecasts as a means to inform decision-making\, with applications to reservoir operations\, agricultural planning\, water quality assessment\, and disaster management. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Lake Mendota - The Good\, The Bad\, The Present
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us in-person or virtually Wednesday\, April 13th to learn more about Lake Mendota’s storied history of research and challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE APRIL CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nLake Mendota is a beloved resource for thousands of people\, but many don’t know that it has a rich history of testing scientific hypotheses. Often cited as the most studied lake in the world\, it has been researched extensively since the 1880’s. This talk will chronologically cover how Lake Mendota has undergone large shifts in its food web and water quality over the last several decades. It will also incorporate current research to better understand the current state of the lake in anticipation for what the future might hold. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nBen Martin is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he works with Jake Vander Zanden on understanding food web ecology of lake ecosystems. Ben has been focused on synthesizing large-scale food web shifts in lakes in northern Wisconsin\, the Madison lakes\, and the Great Lakes. Ben has been very encouraged since moving to Madison from Pennsylvania as the Madison community has shown great interest in science\, especially when it involves our lakes.
