So how can we better plan for a hotter\, wetter Wisconsin? \nAt this month’s Yahara Lakes 101\, Dr. Daniel Wright of the UW-Madison Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will use the August 20\, 2018 storm in Dane County to frame the emerging challenges facing our Yahara Watershed and beyond. We’ll also learn the potential for technology to improve planning and management\, and some areas of concern with “trendy” solutions. Finally\, Dr. Wright will review work by UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts to help solve this challenging problem. \nTickets are transferable but non-refundable. Thank you for your donation to Clean Lakes Alliance! \n\n\n \nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n \nDr. Daniel Wright holds bachelors and masters degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan. He worked as a Regional Sanitation Engineer with the Peace Corps in Bolivia from 2006 – 2008 and as a hydropower engineer in Chile from 2008 – 2009. Dr. Wright earned his PhD from Princeton University\, where he studied urban rainfall and flooding. He worked at the World Bank from 2013 – 2014\, focusing on flood and landslide risk reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean before becoming a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellow at Goddard Space Flight Center. \nDr. Wright joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at UW-Madison as an assistant professor in 2016. He is a member of NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Mission Science Team and received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in Hydrologic Sciences in 2018. Dr. Wright is a founder and co-chair of the Infrastructure Working Group within the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts\, as well as a member of its Science Advisory Board. His research and teaching focuses on floods and how they are influenced by meteorology\, urbanization\, and climate change. \n\n\n \nEvent Details\n\n\n \nThe event is held at The Edgewater. But how has it changed since the influx of European-American immigrants more than 150 years ago? \n\n\n\nThe history can be revealed through the use of sediment cores taken from lakes throughout Wisconsin. We can see the impact of significant changes in land use including agriculture\, logging\, urbanization\, and shoreline development. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101\, former DNR water research scientist Paul Garrison will help us uncover the history—from increased mechanization after World War II\, to the widespread use of synthetic fertilizers. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nPaul Garrison is retired from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources where he was a Water Research Scientist for more than 39 years. His research was mostly concentrated on lakes\, with a specialty in using sediment cores to reconstruct the water quality history of lakes. Garrison also studied acid precipitation\, lake restoration\, lake classification\, mercury pollution\, wetland classification\, and phosphorus impacts on streams. Register today to join us for this educational event at Token Creek County Park. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nDane County’s “Suck the Muck” project has received a lot of exciting attention over the past year for their legacy sediment removal in Dorn Creek where they have removed three to four feet of sediment since 2016. Now on the second phase of the project\, Dane County will begin the program in Token Creek. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Assistant Director of Land & Water Resources John Reimer about the project expansion. Attendees will get to see the phosphorus-laden sediment islands firsthand and learn about the removal process. Ultimately\, this project will divert thousands of pounds of phosphorus from entering our lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Parisi sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Parisi was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. \n\n\n\nParisi’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Parisi knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Parisi dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Parisi believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \n\n\n\nJohn Reimer is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. His technical background has focused on modeling and analysis of watersheds\, rivers\, and lakes. Reimer is responsible for lake level management including aquatic plant harvesting and operation of the three dams in the Yahara Chain of Lakes. \n\n\n\nEvent Details: Field Trip Edition!\n\n\n\nThis event is held at Token Creek County Park on Token Creek Lane (see map below). Check in will open at 4:30 p.m. with a presentation and walking tour from 5 – 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe event will be held outdoors on grassy terrain. Walking will be required. Attendees should dress for the weather and bring bug spray. Parking is available at multiple parking lots along Token Creek Lane but may require some walking to the event site. \n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE for all attendees. But what are the impacts of climate change on our local communities\, individual lives\, and lakes? \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Steve Vavrus of the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies about the impacts of ongoing climate change on our lakes. Although lakes provide recreation\, ecosystem services\, and a sense of place to many Wisconsin residents\, they are at risk. This presentation will highlight effects on our lakes including lake levels\, ice cover\, water quality\, and invasive species. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Vavrus is a Senior Scientist in the Nelson Institute Center for Climatic Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also the faculty program coordinator of the Yahara Watershed Academy. Steve uses computer climate models to understand how climate is changing across the Earth\, including Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. Extreme weather events are an important theme of his research\, particularly how they might be affected by climate change. Steve serves as co-director of the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI) and is a member of its Climate Working Group. He has a long-standing interest in lake ice and has modeled how weather and climate variations affect ice cover on our Madison-area lakes. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event is at The Edgewater.
