SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 - A Master Plan for Vilas Park
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes and hear a brief welcome from City of Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway! \n  \nRegister for Yahara Lakes 101 \n\n  \n\nAbout this Talk \nIn this month’s talk\, we’ll hear from MSA Senior Landscape Architect Dan Williams and City of Madison Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp as they provide an update on the re-envisioning of Vilas Park\, located on the northern shore of Lake Wingra. The Vilas Park Master Plan will be a framework plan that will help to inform improvements at the park over the next 15-20 years. \nVilas Park was a gift to the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association from William and Anna Vilas in 1904. The MPPDA hired famed landscape gardener (landscape architect) O.C. Simonds to design the iconic park. Simonds’ design called for the dredging of a mostly boggy site along the shores of Lake Wingra to create a lagoon and usable park land. During the same period\, Simonds designed Tenney Park creating the anchor parks of Madison Park and Pleasure Drive. \nToday\, after more than one hundred years\, Vilas Park is experiencing its first large-scale master planning effort. Several plans and park improvements have occurred over time but the current plan encompasses in-depth research of the environs and a robust public engagement process. As a waterfront park\, much of the discussion has been focused on the effect on Lake Wingra’s watershed\, shoreline\, and the lagoon within the park. Other features such as the Native American Mounds enlighten users on the protection of culturally sensitive resources. The presentation will highlight the original ideas and design principles of O.C. Simonds and how current community desires and trends shape a plan for the future with an eye to the past. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\nBeginning with an introduction from City of Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway \nDan Williams (MSA) With more than 30 years of landscape architectural experience\, Dan takes pride in his ability to make every project\, large or small\, something special. He is energized by the challenges offered by each new site. Dan’s design philosophy is uncomplicated and based on two foundational factors: understanding and vision. Understanding involves developing a solid comprehension of the environmental\, social\, and economic factors related to a project. This knowledge provides a framework for building an inspiring vision for the landscape. \nEric Knepp (City of Madison) has been the Madison Parks Superintendent since 2014. As Superintendent\, he has worked with the community to invest in facilities and partnerships that improve connection to the public’s waterfront. Eric regularly engages with our lakes by swimming\, fishing\, kayaking\, and spending time at the shoreline with his wife\, two kids\, and dog. \nEvent Details\nThis event will be held online via Zoom on Wednesday\, December 9th from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. The online talk is free and open to the public. A link to access the talk LIVE will be sent to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/yahara-lakes-101-a-master-plan-for-vilas-park-registration-128866676699 \nYahara Lakes 101 Lecture Series\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. \nThe series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and UW-Extension Lakes\, with presenting sponsors First Weber Foundation and Johnson Financial Group\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, supporting sponsor National Guardian Life Insurance Company\, and media partner the Isthmus.

SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101\, Leaf-Free Streets: Reducing Urban Phosphorus
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \nRegister for Yahara Lakes 101 \nAbout this Talk\nTrees have long been a valued feature of the urban landscape. They provide a host of benefits such as habitat\, aesthetics\, energy savings\, and noise reduction. Trees are also an important part of the urban hydrologic cycle. The functions and value of trees have recently gained attention as viable tools in the management of urban stormwater. \nResearch on the interactions between urban trees and stormwater quantity and quality has revealed a double-edged sword. A community with dense overhead tree canopy may benefit from reduced stormwater runoff volume through interception\, transpiration\, and infiltration but may also suffer from excess nutrients leached to nearby receiving waters from leaf litter. This presentation will highlight ongoing research that will help environmental managers assess how municipal leaf collection and street cleaning programs can limit the amount of phosphorus in stormwater runoff. \nAbout our Speaker\nBill Selbig is a research hydrologist at the Upper Midwest Water Science Center of the U.S Geological Survey. For the past 25 years his research has focused on characterization of pollutants in urban runoff\, identification of their sources\, and evaluation of the techniques and practices designed to treat them. Much of his research has been used to stimulate or amend stormwater policy and guidance in the United States. Bill also leads a team of USGS scientists who study urban stormwater and green infrastructure around the Great Lakes as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. In addition to his work at the USGS\, Bill serves as science advisor for several national stormwater research groups. \nEvent Details\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. The online talk is free and open to the public. A link to access the talk LIVE will be sent to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \nYahara Lakes 101 Lecture Series\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes.

SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101: Pheasant Branch Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Yahara Lakes 101\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nIn this month’s talk\, we’ll hear from representatives of the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy\, Dane County\, and City of Middleton about the recently purchased\, 160-acre farm directly north of Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The property acquisition is the largest conservation preservation investment in Dane County’s history\, costing nearly 10 million dollars. \nPheasant Branch Conservancy is a natural area owned by the Dane County Parks Department\, the City of Middleton\, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The area is also host to the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy\, a dedicated group focused on restoring\, protecting\, and promoting the conservancy as an ecological whole. The conservancy is a natural area made up of many types of diverse habitats\, including wetlands\, prairies\, and forests. Home to a wide variety of animals and plants\, the land contains the headwaters of a stream which flows into Pheasant Branch Creek before it reaches Lake Mendota. \nRestoring the additional Dane County property to natural prairie will help to improve infiltration of rainwater into the ground. Prairie plants often have better root systems than crops\, allowing prairies to absorb the rainwater where it falls instead of running off into the nearest waterway. The deep root systems also hold soil in place\, which reduces the amount of sediment lost with runoff. Dane County expects to prevent more than 2.6 million gallons of runoff each year through increased infiltration into the natural landscape. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Joe sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Joe was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. Joe’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Joe dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Joe believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \nLloyd Eagan (Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy) graduated from Smith College with a degree in Environmental Biology and moved to Madison – the birthplace of limnology – to pursue a master’s degree in Water Resources Management from the University of Wisconsin Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. After several water quality planning jobs\, she became Dane County’s FIRST Lakes and Watershed Coordinator. She spent nearly 35 years working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, serving more than six years as the regional director of the south-central region\, and for the final two years of her career she returned to her water roots and served as Water Leader for the southern half of Wisconsin. She currently serves as the co-president of the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy. \nMark Wegner (Assistant Director for Conservancy Lands/Forestry for the City of Middleton) is leading the response and recovery effort from the 2018 flooding for the Public Lands Department. Over the past 10 years\, Mark has overseen Middleton’s response to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in a proactive response that diversified the urban forest of Middleton. In his spare time\, Mark is an aspiring tri-athlete. The Middleton Public Lands\, Recreation & Forestry Department is responsible for over 1\,100 acres of park and conservancy land\, 27 miles of multi-use paths\, and comprehensive recreation programming for the community.  The Department is a 4-time gold medal finalist with the National Recreation & Parks Association and is home to the Wisconsin Parks & Recreation Association (WPRA) 2019 Recreation Professional of the Year and the 2019 Park Professional of the Year. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. The online talk is free and open to the public. A link to access the talk LIVE will be sent to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. \n\n\n\nThe series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies\, with presenting sponsors First Weber Foundation and Johnson Financial Group\, monthly sponsor Hy Cite Enterprises\, hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, supporting sponsor National Guardian Life Insurance Company\, and media partner the Isthmus.

SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101: The Planning of Willow Creek (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Back to the Future: The Planning of Willow Creek as a Campus Amenity\nJoin us for this ONLINE edition of Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \nClick here to register \nAbout this Talk\nWillow Creek is the end-of-pipe water course to a 1\,900-acre urban watershed. But how can it be transformed into a green infrastructure destination on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus? \nIn this month’s talk\, we’ll hear from experts from the UW-Madison and the City of Madison about how Willow Creek is not solely being planned as a storm water conveyance\, but also as a natural resource that is integral to the campus greenspace network. With proposed new institutional developments\, and increases in campus populations in the areas directly adjacent to the corridor\, we’ll learn how the campus can reorient itself to this forgotten corridor. Through area planning and creek engagement from adjacent development\, Willow Creek and University Bay will be transitioned from the ‘back waters’ of the agricultural campus\, to a critical infrastructural amenity to the entire community. \nEvent Details\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. The online talk is free and open to the public. A link to access the talk LIVE will be sent to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \nAbout our Speakers\nGary A. Brown\, PLA\, FASLA has been with the University of Wisconsin for more than 34 years. After serving for 15 years with the UW System as a landscape architect and facilities planner\, his travels around the state’s 26-campus system brought him back to the flagship UW-Madison. He currently serves as the director of Campus Planning and Landscape Architecture\, overseeing the development and implementation of the 20-year campus master plan on this spectacular 938-acre university campus. \nHe also serves as the university’s historic preservation officer\, environmental affairs officer\, and is the director of the university’s 300-acre Lakeshore Nature Preserve. But how has it changed since the influx of European-American immigrants more than 150 years ago? \n\n\n\nThe history can be revealed through the use of sediment cores taken from lakes throughout Wisconsin. We can see the impact of significant changes in land use including agriculture\, logging\, urbanization\, and shoreline development. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101\, former DNR water research scientist Paul Garrison will help us uncover the history—from increased mechanization after World War II\, to the widespread use of synthetic fertilizers. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nPaul Garrison is retired from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources where he was a Water Research Scientist for more than 39 years. His research was mostly concentrated on lakes\, with a specialty in using sediment cores to reconstruct the water quality history of lakes. Garrison also studied acid precipitation\, lake restoration\, lake classification\, mercury pollution\, wetland classification\, and phosphorus impacts on streams. He now works part-time for Onterra\, LLC doing lake management planning. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThe event is held at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Jeff Endres
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Pride Farms: Collaborating for farm sustainability and water quality\n\n\n\nRegister today!\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us at Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about important issues impacting our lakes! \n\n\n\nAbout the talk\n\n\n\nAgricultural areas represent the majority of the Yahara Watershed and the largest potential for phosphorus reduction. So what is being done in rural areas to help our lakes? \n\n\n\nYahara Pride Farms (YPF) is a farmer-led nonprofit organization working to improve soil and water quality. Since 2012\, farmers in YPF programs have documented nearly 68\,000 pounds of phosphorus that have remained on farm fields and out of rivers and streams by embracing farming practices promoted by the group. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Yahara Pride Farms Chair Jeff Endres about the organization’s strategic urban-rural partnerships and how farmers are investing in lake health. \n\n\n\nAbout our speaker\n\n\n\nJeff Endres is co-owner of Endres Berryridge Farms LLC in Waunakee\, together with his brothers\, Randy and Steve. He has 26 years of experience in field management\, machinery operation and repairs\, and overall day-to-day dairy operation management. The Endres family has farmed with a conservation mindset for multiple generations and was one of the first farms in Wisconsin to have an official nutrient management plan. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, Jeff teamed up with other farmers to create Yahara Pride Farms\, with the mission to promote agricultural stewardship. The group focuses on the Yahara River Watershed\, which covers one of the most populated and agriculturally productive areas in southern Wisconsin. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeled the Yahara River\, which connects several Madison-area lakes\, as an impaired waterway and since that time\, Yahara Pride Farms has been working on solutions. Today\, the organization’s purpose is to inform agriculturists about water quality issues\, reward farmers for environmental stewardship efforts\, advance new strategies to improve water quality\, and connect with the public to show agriculture’s commitment to protecting natural resources. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event is at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with John Lyons
DESCRIPTION:The Decline of the Small Fishes of the Madison Lakes: Why it Matters and What We Can Do About It\n\n\n\nREGISTER TODAY\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us at Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about important issues impacting our lakes! \n\n\n\nAbout the talk\n\n\n\nMadison’s lakes are famous for excellent fishing. A thriving population of large game fish for anglers to catch is dependent upon the small fishes that live near the shore and serve as prey. But what happens when the diversity of nearshore small fishes declines? \nOver the last 50-100 years\, many small species of fish have declined significantly or even disappeared. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Dr. John Lyons of the UW-Madison Zoological Museum about how water quality impacts diversity of small fishes\, why it’s important\, and what we can do to help. \n\n\n \nAbout our speaker\n\n\n \nDr. John Lyons describes himself as a life-long fish nerd. From the time he was a boy\, Lyons has been passionate about watching\, catching\, keeping\, and studying fish. He likes to cook and eat them too. In his professional career\, Lyons has worked on ichthyology (the study of fishes)\, fisheries management\, and aquatic conservation. \nLyons is currently the Curator of Fishes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Zoological Museum\, a position he has held since 1985. From 1985 until his retirement in 2017\, Lyons also served as a Fisheries Research Scientist and Supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, where he studied ways to protect fishes and their habitats and to improve fishing around the state. Lyons holds his PhD and M.S. in Zoology from UW-Madison and his B.S. in Biology from Union College\, Schenectady\, NY all with a focus on fish. \n\n\n \nEvent Details\n\n\n \nThis event is at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101: Suck the Muck at Token Creek
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101 “Suck the Muck” Edition with Dane County Executive Joe Parisi\n\n\n\nYahara Lakes 101 is taking a field trip! Register today to join us for this educational event at Token Creek County Park. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nDane County’s “Suck the Muck” project has received a lot of exciting attention over the past year for their legacy sediment removal in Dorn Creek where they have removed three to four feet of sediment since 2016. Now on the second phase of the project\, Dane County will begin the program in Token Creek. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, we’ll hear from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Assistant Director of Land & Water Resources John Reimer about the project expansion. Attendees will get to see the phosphorus-laden sediment islands firsthand and learn about the removal process. Ultimately\, this project will divert thousands of pounds of phosphorus from entering our lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Parisi sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Parisi was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. \n\n\n\nParisi’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Parisi knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Parisi dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Parisi believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \n\n\n\nJohn Reimer is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. His technical background has focused on modeling and analysis of watersheds\, rivers\, and lakes. Reimer is responsible for lake level management including aquatic plant harvesting and operation of the three dams in the Yahara Chain of Lakes. \n\n\n\nEvent Details: Field Trip Edition!\n\n\n\nThis event is held at Token Creek County Park on Token Creek Lane (see map below). SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Hilary Dugan
DESCRIPTION:Yahara Lakes 101: Salt and our freshwater lakes\nREGISTER TODAY \n\nAbout the talk\nRoad salt is often thought of as an ‘environmentally safe’ chemical. However\, at high concentrations\, chloride can alter aquatic ecosystems by stressing freshwater species\, and deteriorate drinking water sources. For 70+ years\, we have applied road salt (sodium chloride) to paved surfaces\, without any regard for the environmental consequences. \nIn this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, Hilary Dugan will discuss long-term chloride trends and the state of our lakes across the Midwest and Northeast United States with regard to chloride contamination. We’ll also learn what is currently being done locally to curtail further environmental damage. \nAbout our speaker\nHilary Dugan is an assistant professor at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. As a limnologist\, Hilary studies how terrestrial and atmospheric changes\, such as warming air temperatures or land use patterns\, alter biogeochemical fluxes and aquatic processes in lakes. Her research balances field based programs\, which rely heavily on sensor networks\, with the use and development of analytical models\, and the application of geophysical and geospatial tools. Her research focus is on temperate and polar lakes\, with sites spanning from Wisconsin to Antarctica. \nOne of Hilary’s recent research projects examined long-term chloride trends in over 500 lakes in North America and Europe. She found that many urban lakes in North America have undergone considerable long-term salinization stemming from road salt application. \nEvent Details\nThis event is at The Edgewater. Come at 7:30 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and to enjoy your coffee\, pastries\, and fruit. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Claudio Gratton
DESCRIPTION:Upending the Paradigm: Agriculture and the environment for a sustainable future\nREGISTER TODAY\nJoin us for Yahara Lakes 101 to learn about the issues that impact our lakes! \nAbout the talk\nIncreasing pressure on our agricultural lands pose significant biological and ecosystem-level consequences to our lands and waters. But what about the bugs? Lesser known\, but equally important\, is the decrease in species that support vital agricultural functions such as crop pollination and pest suppression. In this month’s Yahara Lakes 101 talk\, UW-Madison entomologist\, Claudio Gratton\, will discuss how we can support agricultural needs while maintaining a multifunctional landscape that meets the diverse needs of our society\, and crawling neighbors. \nAbout our speaker\nDr. Gratton has been on the faculty in the Entomology department at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison since 2003.  His research group works broadly on the landscape ecology of arthropod food webs in agricultural landscapes.  Their research has examined the role of unmanaged “non-crop” lands in the agricultural matrix and their effects on the abundance and diversity of beneficial insects including predators and pollinators and their effect on the provisioning of ecosystem services in agricultural habitats.  Recent work in bioenergy landscapes has been as part of the sustainability team of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC).  Research in the lab looking at the linkages between ecosystems also extends also to examining the relationships between lakes and streams and the adjacent terrestrial landscapes and the role of aquatic insects in creating those linkages. Recently\, he has been part of bee and butterfly conservation efforts in the state. \nDr. Gratton received his BS in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1991) and his PhD in Entomology from the University of California – Berkeley (1997). At UW he teaches courses in Basic and Applied Insect Ecology\, Agroecology\, Field Ecology\, and Multivariate Methods in Ecological research.  His is a current Associate Editor of Ecological Applications.  He is a recipient of the Vilas Research Fellows award (2017)\, and is a Stanford-Woods Institute Aldo Leopold Leadership Program Fellow (2013). \nEvent Details\nThis event is at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Joe Parisi & John Reimer: Dane County Budget Flood Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Recovery\, Rebuild\, Resilience: Dane County Budget Flood Initiatives\nREGISTER NOW\nAbout this talk\nIn the wake of historic late summer flooding that resulted in millions of dollars of damage in Dane County\, Joe Parisi and John Reimer will discuss new initiatives the County will include in its upcoming 2019 budget proposal to aid flood recovery\, increase lake health\, and build future resiliency.\nAbout our speakers\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Joe sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Joe was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk.\n\nJoe’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. Now Joe believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him.\n\nJohn Reimer is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. His technical background has focused on modeling and analysis of watersheds\, rivers\, and lakes. Reimer is responsible for lake level management including aquatic plant harvesting and operation of the three dams in the Yahara Chain of Lakes.\nEvent Details\nThe event is held at The Edgewater. Come at 7:30 a.m. for a meet-and-greet and to enjoy coffee\, pastries\, and fruit. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Cal DeWitt: Waubesa Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \nSince first making his home in the Waubesa Wetlands in 1972\, environmental scientist Dr. Cal DeWitt has worked with his UW research students to know and understand this grand wetland ecosystem for more than four decades. Along with his wetland neighbor and Aldo Leopold Professor Emerita of Restoration Ecology\, Joy Zedler\, Cal has recently brought these decades of study together to produce Joy’s book on Waubesa Wetlands\, whose title is also that of Cal’s illustrated lecture for Clean Lakes Alliance. \nDr. DeWitt selected the Waubesa Wetlands as his family’s habitat\, much as the Paleo-Indians did ten thousand years ago\, because of its ecological richness that supports not only the immense variety of plants and animals and its vital ecosystem services\, but also human cultures right through to the present. \nBy delving into the historical records readable from Waubesa’s great peat deposits\, discovering its developmental history and sustaining services to the lakes and their life\, and describing its vibrant life\, Cal will open us to a new look at an old gem. Then he will apply this to understanding and caring for our place in the string of lakes and wetlands we call the Yahara chain of lakes. \nAbout our speaker \nCalvin B. “Cal” DeWitt is professor emeritus in the Nelson Institute\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\, who has served on the graduate faculties of Environment and Resources\, Water Resources Management\, Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development\, and Limnology and Marine Science. His university assignment since 1972 has been “to address the fragmentation of the disciplines” through development of an integrative program of teaching\, research\, and public service directed toward ecological integrity and sustainability. His service at UW includes four decades of teaching the undergraduate course in Environmental Science and three decades of teaching the Institute’s graduate course in interdisciplinary wetlands research\, Field Investigations in Wetland Ecology\, taught each fall semester at his home in the Waubesa Wetlands. \nIn 2005\, Cal received the National Wildlife Federation’s “Connie” as “a world-class conservationist.” He also was awarded the FUNEP 500 Environmental Achiever Award\, Friends of the United Nations Environmental Programme; the Capitol Community Citizens Award for Land Use Planning in the Town of Dunn\, the Town of Dunn Stewardship Award; Environmentalist of the Year Award\, Madison Audubon Society; and the Distinguished Alumni Award\, Calvin College. Googling “Earth Stewardship and Laudato Si” accesses a free copy of one of his most recent publications\, in The Quarterly Review of Biology. He and his wife Ruth have lived on Waubesa Wetlands since 1972\, where they have raised their three children. \nCal has taught and inspired hundreds of students at the University of Wisconsin and has led and contributed actively to conservation and environmental stewardship at the local\, state\, national and international levels. His conservation leadership includes protection of 300 acres of forest in metropolitan Detroit\, the 1\,000-acre Waubesa Wetlands Reserve in Wisconsin\, and a nationally recognized land stewardship initiative in the Town of Dunn\, Wisconsin. \nAbout the series \nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences. \nThe series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies\, with hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, presenting sponsor First Weber Group\, supporting sponsor The Evjue Foundation\, and media sponsor The Isthmus. \nThe event is held both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Trina McMahon: Blue-Green Algae
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \n\n\nCyanobacteria are persistent and a serious problem in the Yahara Watershed. These “blue green algae” are common in lakes that receive an abundance of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus\, from human activity in watersheds. They are known for “blooming” unpredictably during the summer months. These blooms can sometimes be toxic\, because the cyanobacteria produce toxins for unknown reasons. The occurrence of blooms and toxin production cannot currently be predicted because our understanding of cyanobacterial biology is limited. However\, we do know a little bit about how and why they bloom\, and whether or not toxins could be produced in a lake. This talk will explain what we know\, what we don’t know\, and what we wish that we knew\, about freshwater cyanobacteria.\n\n\nAbout our speaker \nKatherine (Trina) McMahon is a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering\, and Bacteriology Departments at UW-Madison. She has been studying freshwater lakes since 2003 when she arrived in Madison after completing her PhD at the University of California at Berkeley. She studies the biology of microorganisms living in freshwater ecosystems using Wisconsin lakes as living laboratories. Her research team uses a combination of classical limnology approaches and modern genomic sequencing techniques to discover how microorganisms in lakes provide critical ecosystem services related to water quality. She is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor and was recently elected into the American Academy of Microbiology.  Trina lives on the west side of Madison with her two children\, husband\, and two silly cats. She is honored to live in the house owned by Aldo Leopold during his tenure at UW-Madison. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101: Monarchs and our lakes
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \nMonarch butterfly populations have been declining over the last 20 years. Because insect numbers are notoriously difficult to assess\, and because they often show large annual fluctuations\, simply documenting this decline has been a challenge. It is now important to move beyond simple documentation\, and toward responding to the challenge posed by monarch conservation\, and insect conservation in general. I’ll describe the amazing biology of migratory monarch populations\, and then discuss how the need for an “all hands on deck” approach to monarch conservation is galvanizing habitat restoration across North America\, including along fragile waterways. \nClean Lakes Alliance will be handing out our FIRST set of 5-year monitoring awards for our citizen monitors that have participated from 2013-2017! \nAbout our speaker \nKaren Oberhauser is the Director of the UW-Madison Arboretum. She and her students have conducted research on several aspects of monarch butterfly ecology. Her research depends on traditional lab and field techniques\, as well as the contributions of a variety of audiences through citizen science. Her strong interest in promoting a citizenry with a high degree of scientific and environmental literacy led to the development of a science education program that involves courses for teachers\, and opportunities for youth to engage in research and share their findings with broad audiences. \nIn 1996\, Karen started a nationwide Citizen Science project called the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project\, which continues to engage hundreds of volunteers throughout North America. Karen has authored over 90 papers on her research on monarchs\, insect conservation\, and citizen science. Her new job at the Arboretum blends her work on habitat conservation\, public outreach\, and citizen science research. \nKaren is passionate about the conservation of the world’s biodiversity\, and believes that the connections her projects promote between monarchs\, humans\, and the natural world promote meaningful conservation action. She is the chair of the Monarch Joint Venture\, and a founding officer of the Monarch Butterfly Fund. In 2013\, Karen received a White House Champion of Change award for her work with Citizen Science. \nAbout the series \nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Susan Graham: Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers
DESCRIPTION:About the talk\n\nJoin us for Yahara Lakes 101 on Wednesday\, April 11th for a special talk on invasive species in our lakes. Susan Graham will speak about the scale of the problem\, what Wisconsin is doing\, what YOU can do to help. We’ll learn about what invaders could be next and what success has looked like right here in Wisconsin.\n\nAquatic invasive species\, otherwise known as “AIS\,” are non-native species that can take over\, spread primarily by humans\, and negatively impact recreation\, the economy\, and our native ecosystems. Wisconsin has a comprehensive rule called “NR-40” that classifies species that are prohibited\, restricted\, or not a concern\, and guides regulations based on risks. For the Wisconsin DNR\, preventing the spread of invasive species relies on a social science understanding of human behavior.\n\nSusan Graham has worked on lake-related issues for 25 years at the Wisconsin DNR and is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more. Don’t miss this talk!\n\nAbout our speaker\n\nSusan Graham earned her master’s degree in Water Resources Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. She has worked on a variety of lake-related issues in her 25 years at Wisconsin DNR\, including water quality assessment\, coordinating the statewide Citizen Lake Monitoring Network\, and serving on committees to establish phosphorus standards for lakes.\n\nSusan is currently the Lakes Coordinator for DNR’s southcentral region\, where she works on aquatic plant management along with monitoring\, grants\, and policy for lakes and aquatic invasive species. Susan is also part of a team that is creating a tool to prioritize response efforts to invasive species on public lands and waters. Sue is an avid organic gardener and hiker\, and loves swimming and paddling when there isn’t ice coating our waters.\n\nAbout the series\n\nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. Each month we feature a different expert to make the science accessible and interesting to non-technical audiences.\n\nThe series is produced in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies\, with hosting sponsor The Edgewater\, presenting sponsor First Weber Group\, supporting sponsor The Evjue Foundation\, and media sponsor The Isthmus.\n\nThe event is held both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) at The Edgewater. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Michael Mucha: Respect Every Drop
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \nWe compartmentalize water in our daily lives.  There is water for drinking and washing\, there is water for recreating and there is water we flush that goes away. \nBut we all know\, at least conceptually\, that water does not actually go away.  It goes through a cycle of use and reuse time after time again.  Michael will talk about efforts to respect every drop of water and the adaptive challenge necessary to turn skeptics into advocates for a sustainable water future. \nAbout our speaker \nMichael Mucha is the Chief Engineer and Director for the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District. He has dedicated his 28-year career in local government to building public trust through sustainability. \nMichael has his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee\, his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Washington-Seattle\, and completed Harvard University’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government program. He is a registered professional engineer. \nMichael serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and teaches courses in sustainable infrastructure management and adaptive leadership at the University of Wisconsin and Edgewood College. \nAbout the series \nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 with Justin Chenevert: Love in the Lakes
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \nOrganisms across the globe are faced with the same dilemma – how to pass on their genes to the next generation and give their youngsters the best possible chance at success. Things are no different for the creatures in the Madison-area lakes. Pike\, panfish\, plants\, and invertebrates all go to great lengths to find love\, but take wildly different approaches. What makes each strategy successful\, and why? During this presentation\, you’ll learn about the mating and reproductive strategies of several important species\, which range from the heartwarming… to the bizarre. \nAbout our speakers \nJustin began his career in water resources hauling laundry baskets of invasive weeds from the muddy Charles River in Boston\, MA. Despite the smell\, he found he loved working with water\, and moved to Madison in 2013 to pursue a master’s degree in Water Resources Management from UW-Madison. Since 2014 Justin has worked for Clean Lakes Alliance in many capacities\, including surveying lake users\, supporting the citizen water quality monitoring program\, making maps\, and analyzing water quality data. He is currently employed by the Department of Natural Resources in the Water Monitoring section. SUMMARY:Yahara Lakes 101 Science Cafe with Paul Robbins
DESCRIPTION:About the talk \n“Water at UW: Current Research\, Science and Engagement for Lakes\, Streams and Watersheds” \nThe University of Wisconsin-Madison has been a world leader in research\, education\, and engagement around water resources for 150 years. That tradition continues. This talk will review a few key areas of current activity on UW’s campus from the Center for Aquatic Sciences\, the Center for Limnology\, the Nelson Institute Program in Water Resources Management\, and the cross campus initiative on “Water@UW”. Highlighting especially work in the Great Lakes\, Wisconsin\, and the Yahara watershed\, the talk will focus on “decision-ready science”\, the relationship between basic research and problem-solving\, and the UW’s philosophy on training the next generation of water stewards. \nAbout our speaker \nPaul Robbins is the director of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he guides the institute in serving as a world leader in addressing rapid global environmental change. Robbins is strengthening the Nelson Institute’s commitment to the Wisconsin Idea through the expansion of its innovative service-learning and internship programs\, partnerships across campus and with outside agencies and organizations\, and community programs and public events. He has years of experience as a researcher and educator\, specializing in human interactions with nature and the politics of natural resource management\, addressing questions spanning conservation conflicts\, urban ecology\, and environment and health interactions. A UW-Madison alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology\, Paul Robbins also holds a master’s degree and doctorate in geography\, both from Clark University. He was raised in Denver\, Colorado. \nAbout the series \nYahara Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes.
