DESCRIPTION:Take a tour of Highland Spring Farm\n\n\n\nClean Lakes Alliance is heading outside the city to visit one of our agricultural neighbors. In the return of our popular Farm Tour\, we’ll visit Kevin Oppermann’s family farm where he implements rotational-grazing techniques\, converting cropland to permanent pasture in an effort to sustainably raise his Scottish Highland cattle. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes Alliance Farm Tours demonstrate effective conservation practices that\, when implemented\, help to protect soil and water quality across Dane County. Attendees will gain a better understanding of effective land management practices. \n\n\n\nThank you Dane County Environmental Council Community Partners Program for making this event possible! \n\n\n\nAbout Highland Spring Farm\n\n\n\nHighland Spring Farm is a pasture-based farm\, located in Oregon. The farm was founded in 2012 and raises grass-fed Scottish Highland beef cattle along with a few other livestock. Located southwest of Lake Waubesa\, the farm is adjacent to the Waubesa Wetlands State Natural Area\, an area owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and The Nature Conservancy.  \nHighland Spring Farm is owned and operated by family farmer\, Kevin and Keely Oppermann and their boys Liam (age 4) and Odin (age 2). After spending several years works in the software industry\, Kevin returned to his farming roots by purchasing two cows and two calves for his family and friends. \nWhat started as a “hobby” quickly changed when Kevin continued to expand his herd to meet demands for beef. Now\, Highland Spring Farm rotationally grazes approximately 125 cattle\, supplies local Madison restaurants\, and provides goods at multiple local farmers’ markets. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nArrive at 9 a.m. for a meet-and-greet. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m.\, followed by a pasture tour at Highland Spring Farm. DESCRIPTION:Join Clean Lakes Alliance for our annual Farm Tour! This year\, we’ll have the chance to tour Endres Berryridge Farm — home base for Clean Lakes Alliance Community Board member and Yahara Pride Farms chair and co-founder\, Jeff Endres. \nWe’ll start off the tour in partnership with the North American Manure Expo. Highlights will include: \n\nA tour of the Endres dairy manure composting operation and a discussion of the costs and water quality benefits\nA tour of an alfalfa field that has had compost applied\, including a demonstration of compost application\nA tour of the Endres heifer barns\, including a look at the recycled compost/sawdust bedding\n\nStick around for an informal Q&A with Clean Lakes Alliance and Yahara Pride Farms to follow the tour. \nWhen you register\, please select one of the following pick up locations: \n\nOlin Park (Downtown Madison\, Olin-Turville Court)\nYahara Heights County Park (NE Madison\, Catfish Court)\nRex’s Innkeeper (Waunakee\, Century Ave)\n\nThere will be a bus shuttle to the farm location.
