Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nHave you been wondering what PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are\, the so-called “forever chemical?” In this talk\, Patrick will explain what PFAS are and what you need to know about them in the environment\, especially surface water. He’ll discuss the range of state-wide results that they’ve collected and put them into context of what they’ve noticed at various sites. He’ll highlight Greater Madison lake results to explain basic trends between PFAS in water and fish. He’ll also share recent research he’s been doing on PFAS in Lake Monona to study the distribution\, fate\, and potential bioaccumulation in various aquatic organisms like small fish\, algae\, zooplankton\, mussels\, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes. His goal of this talk is to explain PFAS in understandable terms\, so you have a working knowledge to better understand this emerging contaminant and its behavior in the aquatic environment that potentially has human health consequences. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nPatrick Gorski is an Emerging Contaminants Research Scientist at the WI Dept. of Natural Resources in the Bureau of Water Quality\, Monitoring Section\, where he started in April of 2020. His current focus of research is PFAS (Per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances) in surface water\, fish tissue\, and fate and transport issues. He also helps coordinate state-wide monitoring for PFAS in surface water as well as provide technical assistance to various DNR programs on PFAS-related issues and other contaminants. For the previous 13 years\, he was an Assistant Scientist and Supervisor at the WI State Laboratory of Hygiene. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Love in the Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about the relationships and reproductive habits of some of our most common underwater dwellers. Justin Chenevert from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is returning for one of our most popular talks: Love in the Lakes. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnter your information in the box below to register\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nOrganisms across the globe are faced with the same dilemma – how to pass on their genes to the next generation and give their youngsters the best possible chance at success. Things are no different for the creatures in the Yahara lakes. Pike\, panfish\, plants\, and invertebrates all go to great lengths to propagate\, but take wildly different approaches. What makes each strategy successful\, and why? During this presentation\, you’ll learn about the mating and reproductive strategies of several important species\, which range from the heartwarming… to the bizarre. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nJustin Chenevert (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources) began his career in water resources by removing invasive plants from the Charles River outside of Boston\, MA. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Overcoming Barriers to Local Water Quality Progress
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this Clean Lakes 101 on Wednesday\, November 8th to hear about progress being made to improve water quality in the Yahara Watershed. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nWhat is needed to make substantial progress on improving water quality in the Yahara Watershed? Many amazing people and partnerships are working hard on this immense challenge. Eric will focus this talk on two aspects that are starting to enter more into the water quality conversation and how they can be implemented: 1) balancing the watershed phosphorus budget and 2) increasing perennial agroecosystems. Reducing the supply of phosphorus that is available for transport from land to water is critical for long-term success. Recent progress in dairy nutrition and manure export are helping but we still have room for improvement. As a complementary approach\, increasing the number of acres devoted to perennial agroecosystems – such as well-managed\, rotational grazing of dairy heifers – can prevent existing phosphorus in watershed soils from being transported downstream while providing many other benefits. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Booth\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Booth is an associate research scientist at UW-Madison in the Departments of Plant & Agroecosystem Sciences and Civil & Environmental Engineering. He holds a BS in environmental engineering from UW-Madison (2004)\, MS in hydrologic science from UC-Davis (2006)\, and PhD in limnology from UW-Madison (2011). His disciplinary background has water as a centerpiece and includes topics such as hydroecology\, impacts of climate and land-use change\, urban stormwater management\, wetland/stream restoration\, water quality\, groundwater hydrology\, fluvial geomorphology\, environmental history\, agroecology\, remote sensing\, and numerical modeling. In addition\, Eric also served as an official delegate to Clean Lakes Alliance’s Yahara CLEAN Compact that produced RENEW THE BLUE: A Community Guide for Cleaner Lakes & Beaches in the Yahara Watershed and has contributed to many State of the Lakes reports for the organization.  \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. From more extreme weather with increased rain in the spring\, to dryer\, hotter summers and winters\, the risks of climate change become clearer all time. These changes are exacerbating existing threats to the Yahara lakes\, such as increased phosphorus runoff. \n\n\n\nDuring this presentation\, you’ll learn the latest information about specific projects that advance Renew the Blue such as Suck the Muck\, manure treatment\, and conservation cover programs\, along with updates on aquatic plant management\, lake levels\, Yahara River sediment removal\, and the ongoing efforts to combat climate change. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDane County Executive: Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. He sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. Joe was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. Joe’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. Now Joe believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. Joe and his wife\, Erin Thornley Parisi\, raised their two daughters on Madison’s east side. With a population of more than 500\,000 and an annual county budget of $600 million\, Dane is Wisconsin’s second largest county. Dane County has the highest private sector job and population growth in Wisconsin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Hicklin: Laura Hicklin is the Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. The Land & Water Resources Department protects and enhances the natural\, cultural\, and historic resources of Dane County; provides the County’s residents with a broad array of accessible\, high quality resource-based recreational services and facilities; and supports residents\, communities\, local governments\, and other agencies and organizations in their resource management and protection activities. Laura’s goal is to bring civility to challenging discussions about natural resource management in Dane County. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Investigating Glacial Lake Yahara
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about the existence and demise of glacial Lake Yahara. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nFollowing the retreat of the last glaciers from Wisconsin a glacial lake formed along the retreating ice margin in the Madison area. Known as glacial Lake Yahara\, this lake covered the footprint of the modern four lakes of Madison at a slightly higher lake level and persisted for several thousand years following local deglaciation. \n\n\n\nIn conjunction with research into a nearby\, former glacial lake in Dodge and Jefferson counties\, a series of sediment cores was collected from low-lying marshes in the Madison area. These targeted locations would have been inundated by glacial Lake Yahara but exposed as the lake level eventually fell. The cores provide chronologic and environmental data on the existence and demise of this lake. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nEric Carson is a research geologist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; he is also currently serving as Interim Director and State Geologist for the WGNHS. He received his B.S. (Geology) from West Virginia University\, and both his M.S. (Geology) and Ph.D. (double major\, Geology and Geography) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has 20 years’ experience in academia and research. His research at the WGNHS investigates the timing of the last glaciation in Wisconsin\, processes associated with rivers and flooding\, and how landscapes evolve over timescales ranging from thousands to tens of millions of years. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at The Edgewater hotel – grand ballroom level 5 (1001 Wisconsin Pl\, Madison\, WI 53703). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. The program runs from 8 – 9 a.m. A Q/A session will follow the presentation as time allows. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101 - Native Seeds for the Future: Dane County's Seed Program
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this VIRTUAL EDITION of Clean Lakes 101 on Wednesday\, November 9\, 2022. Register below to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\nRegister by entering your information in the box below\n\n\n\nAll Clean Lakes 101 events are free to Friends of Clean Lakes Alliance. Friends are individuals that support our lakes annually with a tax-deductible donation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe Dane County Park System manages over 17\,000 acres of land that staff\, volunteers\, and partner organizations work to protect\, improve\, and restore. Among that total acreage exists a scattering of robust tallgrass prairies\, a critical habitat for wildlife and a water quality benefit for our lakes. Prairies are native to the state of Wisconsin and have evolved here alongside native wildlife and pollinators. Prairies perform ecosystem services like managing rainfall by increasing infiltration\, which is crucial for plant growth and resupplying groundwater. Many prairie plants have long\, deep roots\, which prevent soil erosion that would otherwise bring nutrients like phosphorus into our lakes. \n\n\n\nTo support existing prairies and establish new ones\, native seeds are in high demand. In 2021\, the total collected seeds had an estimated value of well over $1\,000\,000 and will be used to restore hundreds of acres of land. Without the support from volunteers\, this level of restoration would not be possible. This presentation will showcase the Dane County Park’s native seed program and take the audience through every step of the process from seed collection to planting and everything in between. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nLars Higdon has been the Botanist/Naturalist with Dane County Parks since 2016. He enjoys working closely with a large workforce of volunteers to restore prairies\, savannas\, and woodlands across dozens of parks and project sites throughout the park system. Lars has worked in multiple capacities managing and restoring natural communities in Wisconsin as well as southern California. Lars holds a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event has been changed to ONLY VIRTUAL. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: "Suck the Muck" at Sixmile Creek
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is taking a field trip to learn more about Dane County’s signature Suck the Muck effort to remove legacy sediment. Register today to join us on Monday\, August 22nd for this educational event at Sixmile Creek with Dane County Executive Joe Parisi. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE “SUCK THE MUCK” FIELD TRIP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nDane County’s “Suck the Muck” project has received a lot of exciting attention over the past few years for its legacy sediment removal in Dorn Creek and Token Creek. Now on the third phase of the project\, Dane County will begin the work in Sixmile Creek. It is estimated that approximately 25\,000 tons (or about 1\,800 dump truck loads) of material will be removed from this section of Sixmile Creek\, including an estimated 60\,000 pounds of phosphorus contained in the accumulated sediment. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s Clean Lakes 101 field trip edition\, we’ll hear an update from Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Assistant Director of Land and Water Resources John Reimer about the project. Attendees will get to see the phosphorus-laden sediment islands firsthand and learn about the removal process. Ultimately\, this project is currently estimated to divert thousands of pounds of phosphorus from entering our lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCounty Executive Joe Parisi has called Dane County home his entire life. Parisi sought out public service as a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him. He was first elected as County Executive\, the chief elected leader of Dane County\, in 2011 after 6 years in the State Assembly and 8 years as Dane County Clerk. \n\n\n\nParisi’s priority is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to succeed. He believes investing in people pays big dividends. Joe knows this can work because he experienced it. As a teenager\, Parisi dropped out of high school. He was encouraged to return to education through a community program by people who believed in him. So he worked to earn his GED and went on to MATC (now Madison College) and graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in sociology. Now Parisi believes it is his turn to give back to ensure that our children’s generation has access to the same opportunities that were available to him. \n\n\n\nJohn Reimer is the Assistant Director of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department. His technical background has focused on modeling and analysis of watersheds\, rivers\, and lakes. Reimer is responsible for lake level management\, including aquatic plant harvesting and operation of the three dams in the Yahara chain of lakes. \n\n\n\nEvent Details: Field Trip Edition!\n\n\n\nThis event will be held at Sixmile Creek. (5656 Enchanted View Lane\, Waunakee)This event is held at North Mendota Natural Resource Area near Sixmile Creek (see map below). SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe mechanical harvesting of aquatic plants started in the early 1980s on the Yahara chain of lakes. Efforts have since expanded to include a fleet of 12 aquatic plant harvesters and various equipment. However\, rapid plant growth and changing public expectations continue to present ongoing challenges. Effective aquatic plant management is a difficult balance between sometimes competing factors\, such as public safety\, recreational opportunity\, a healthy aquatic ecosystem\, and cost. \n\n\n\nToday\, Dane County’s mechanical harvesting program focuses on two priority areas. The first priority is to target plant growth occurring within the Yahara River. Excessive plant growth restricts water flow moving through the Yahara chain of lakes\, creating challenges to maintain lake levels with the Wisconsin DNR water level orders. The second priority is to mitigate recreational impairment by removing invasive aquatic weeds. Additionally\, there are often public misunderstandings related to where and when aquatic plant harvesting is allowed. In this talk\, we will discuss regulatory requirements\, locations of harvesting\, and impacts to the local fishery. Information on data collection and the five-year permitting process will also be described. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nPete Jopke is a 1990 graduate of UW-LaCrosse and has spent time with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, Sauk County\, and\, for the last 26 years\, with the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department. His entire 31-year career in natural resources has been centered on water. In addition to working with the aquatic plant program\, he also serves as the County’s Aquatic Species Coordinator and assists with all things lakes and rivers. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us for this in-person or virtual hybrid edition of Clean Lakes 101 to learn about research to predict summertime algal abundance. Register as an in-person attendee or to receive a Zoom link through your confirmation email and watch virtually. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR “SEASON-AHEAD ALGAL BLOOM FORECASTING”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nIn recent decades\, cultural eutrophication of coastal waters and inland lakes around the world has contributed to a rapid expansion of harmful cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Potential outbreaks of toxin-producing cyanobacteria species have drawn concern from health officials and water managers given their negative ecological\, aesthetic\, and socioeconomic impacts. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, little information regarding expected summertime cyanobacteria abundance is available prior to the season. With sufficient lead time\, communicating the likelihood of elevated cyanobacteria abundance may be informative for proactively managing potential threats to lake and beach safety. We developed a model to issue predictions in early June of expected summertime cyanobacteria abundance for Lake Mendota. The prediction model demonstrates moderate to good skill and an ability to accurately predict summers with above-normal cyanobacteria abundance. Associated beach closure predictions also show promise but are highly sensitive to the short observational record – a limitation directly being addressed by Clean Lakes Alliance volunteer monitors and researchers at UW-Madison. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Paul Block is an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research focuses on hydroclimatology and water resources systems\, with a goal to couple climate\, hydrology\, and management models and knowledge to reduce risks and promote sustainability of water resources for societal benefit. He is involved in many national and international projects that promote season-ahead forecasts as a means to inform decision-making\, with applications to reservoir operations\, agricultural planning\, water quality assessment\, and disaster management. He also has extensive experience as a licensed civil engineer working on groundwater protection and extraction\, landfill management\, and storm water control projects. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Changing How We See Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, January 12th to hear from Igor Mrdjen as he discusses research to better monitor and study harmful algal blooms. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, several advancements in harmful algal bloom (HAB) monitoring approaches and technologies have expanded scientists’ and regulators’ ability to monitor and study algal blooms. BloomOptix is a start-up focused on innovating how we monitor and study HABs by leveraging emerging technologies and methods. The company began in 2019\, using advanced sensors and drone technologies to study HABs and water quality phenomena around New York State. In 2021\, BloomOptix launched a new product which uses artificial intelligence and digital microscopy to identify and quantify HAB-causing cyanobacteria in water samples. This presentation will detail past and present BloomOptix projects including use of drones for HAB studies\, artificial intelligence and how these technologies can help empower decision makers\, safety personnel\, and citizen scientists. \n\n\n\nThis past summer\, Clean Lakes Alliance volunteers participated in this long-distance collaboration. Equipped with portable digital microscopes generously shipped all the way from London company Iolight\, volunteers collected microscopic images of algae and cyanobacteria cells. These images are being used to train an AI mobile app to quickly differentiate between harmless green algae and toxin producing cyanobacteria. \n\n\n\nMeet our Speaker\n\n\n\nAs an innovator within Ramboll\, Igor Mrdjen is currently leading BloomOptix\, a team focused on using technology to change how we monitor algal blooms. Through innovation\, BloomOptix is developing an AI-assisted cyanobacteria monitoring tool\, methods for drone-based hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing of harmful algal blooms\, sediment plumes and various factors impacting water quality\, and introduced new technologies such as submersible ROVs to increase water work safety at Ramboll. \n\n\n\nIgor has a widely interdisciplinary research background in Environmental Health Sciences. He has led\, designed\, and conducted research on various water quality and health phenomena including: microcystin toxicity and carcinogenicity in mammalian models; ecological and health impacts of harmful algal blooms; role of microplastics in toxicology; microbial source tracking of fecal contaminants; and development of novel remote sensing methods for imaging of terrestrial and aquatic phenomena. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: A New Vision Through UW Student Design
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us online on Wednesday\, December 8th to hear from two UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering senior Capstone teams as they present their culminating designs for two lake-friendly improvement projects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nSince 2016\, Clean Lakes Alliance has worked in partnership with the UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department to support student capstone projects focused on designing more accessible and lake-friendly parks\, beaches\, and community spaces. Senior Capstone Design is a required course for all civil and environmental engineers at UW-Madison and serves as the culminating work of their undergraduate degrees. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes Alliance\, along with CG Schmidt\, is proud to be a sponsoring partner of these student capstone projects. While Clean Lakes Alliance serves as a “client”\, the students work diligently all semester to apply their acquired expertise to inspire the community through unique project designs that advocate for healthy lakes and beaches. With 48% of the shoreline owned by the public and 25 beaches in the Greater Madison area\, this is an excellent avenue to elevate a variety of project opportunities for the students and the community. In this month’s Clean Lakes 101\, you’ll be presented two unique projects in the Madison area: \n\n\n\nPlaenert Drive/Wingra Creek RevitalizationJohn Nolen Drive Redesign\n\n\n\nProject Details\n\n\n\nProject 1: Plaenert Drive/Wingra Creek Revitalization \n\n\n\nThis project is located along Wingra Creek in southern Madison\, Wisconsin. The creek is bounded to the north and south by W. Wingra Drive and Plaenert Drive\, and Fish Hatchery Road and S. Park Street to the west and east. To highlight the importance of waterways within the heart of Greater Madison\, the creation of an inclusive and inviting greenspace and park setting is the focus of this project. By providing an alternative route design for Plaenert Drive\, this allows for development of a park setting on the south side of Wingra Creek. \n\n\n\nThis project aims to improve and protect Madison’s water resources while involving the community in its development. Phosphorus reduction is at the forefront in enhancing water resources and continuing to establish Madison as a ‘green city’. Enhancing water quality\, sustainably protecting the shoreline\, improving access\, and improving placemaking of the region is incorporated into every aspect of the project design. This region will provide a space for the community and environment to seamlessly interact by featuring many amenities including a viewing platform over Wingra Creek\, pedestrian path\, and non-motorized boat launch for creek access. \n\n\n\nProject 2: John Nolen Drive Redesign \n\n\n\nJohn Nolen Drive across Lake Monona serves as the primary gateway to downtown Madison. To reflect the significance of the causeway\, our objectives are to improve recreation opportunities for users\, manage runoff to minimize negative impacts of stormwater\, address shoreline erosion from waves\, and improve aesthetics and landscaping along the causeway. Our designs seek to improve water quality\, increase sustainability and access\, and to enhance placemaking. The improvements for the bike and pedestrian path will create a significant positive recreational impact on the community’s transportation network and remind users that Greater Madison values green infrastructure and the lakes. \n\n\n\nThe bike and pedestrian path final design includes a 16 ft wide pedestrian boardwalk stretching the southern half of the existing bike and pedestrian pathway\, use of recycled materials\, and the inclusion of several surface level and underground stormwater management techniques. Alongside the boardwalk there is a two-lane bike path\, two 225 sq ft outlook points along the boardwalk\, and a 625 sq ft capital outlook point. In addition to the boardwalk\, this alternative includes amenities such as bike racks\, benches\, emergency call boxes\, signage\, local art\, coastline steps for increased erosion control and recreational use\, and landscaping. \n\n\n\nDesign images of Project 1 and 2 respectively seen below: \n\n\n\nPlaenert Drive and Wingra Creek Revitalization\n\n\n\nJohn Nolen Drive Redesign\n\n\n\nMeet the Students\n\n\n\nChase Cummings is graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: At-Home Water Quality Action
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, November 10th to learn about ways that you can help create more resilient landscapes in our communities. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, November 10th to hear Katie Richgels discuss actionable ways for residents to reduce stormwater runoff from reaching the lakes. Land use and climate impacts\, such as heavy rain and runoff\, and other headwinds threaten our progress toward healthy lakes. Fortunately\, you don’t need to live on the lakes to make a difference in our Yahara Watershed. Many small actions can make our landscape more resilient and add up to big impacts for water quality. \n\n\n\nOur speaker will cover how stormwater from the Madison Metro area impacts the Yahara Watershed and provide some practical strategies for reducing runoff and capturing stormwater where we live. From complex water mitigation installations such as swales and rain gardens\, to simple redirection of downspouts and collection of leaf litter\, we’ll highlight the many large and small ways you can reduce your impacts and contribute to sustainability of our lakes for many generations to come. Let’s challenge each other to change just one thing\, because together we can have a positive impact on the issues affecting our watershed. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\n\n\nKatie Richgels earned her PhD in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Colorado and completed her undergraduate degree in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin. She studied aquatic ecosystems and amphibian malformations for her thesis\, and now manages a team of scientists who investigate wildlife disease outbreaks for a federal agency. She has taught introductory biology\, biology for non-scientists\, and parasitology at the University of Colorado\, and currently is a recurring guest lecturer in the University of Wisconsin wildlife diseases course. Currently\, she is the Chief of the Ecology and Epidemiology Branch at the National Wildlife Health Center of the USGS. She is a mom of two\, avid natives gardener\, and all around lover of the natural world. She began volunteering her time and expertise for The608.org in January of 2021\, with a series of prerecorded informational talks called “Living Among Lakes”\, which has provided a connection to the community of lake enthusiasts in Madison and a space where we can learn from one another. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: A New Compact for Cleaner Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us via Zoom on Wednesday\, October 20th to learn more about ongoing efforts to improve the condition and usability of our lakes and beaches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for the October Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nThe Yahara River Watershed contributes significantly to the region’s economic vitality and quality of life. Despite years of investment in water quality improvements\, the watershed’s five lakes remain highly eutrophic\, and intensifying climate impacts threaten to further deteriorate water quality. \n\n\n\nThe Yahara CLEAN Compact\, a diverse coalition of 19 organizations and agencies\, seeks to improve and protect regional water quality by strengthening community partnerships and uniting around shared\, measurable goals. This presentation by the consultant team of SmithGroup and Urban Assets will describe the process and recommendations of the Yahara CLEAN Compact’s 3.0 Plan\, a strategic playbook developed through community input for reducing phosphorus and bacteria in the lakes. \n\n\n\nThe plan outlines a comprehensive series of strategies to improve water quality and defines key roles and responsibilities of various landowners and managers within the watershed for contributing to healthier lakes. Everyone has a role to play. Register for this presentation to learn what you can do to restore cleaner lakes. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nCassie Goodwin is a principal civil engineer at SmithGroup who is passionate about sustainable infrastructure and making positive impacts on people’s lives. SUMMARY:Clean Lakes 101: Farm\, Energy\, Water\, & Carbon Markets
DESCRIPTION:Clean Lakes 101\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, August 11th to hear about a new program designed to assist farmers in their efforts of environmental stewardship. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR CLEAN LAKES 101\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Talk\n\n\n\nJoin us Wednesday\, August 11th for “Farm\, Energy\, Water\, & Carbon Markets\,” sponsored by Virent. We’ll hear Tim Baye and Jessica Niekrasz discuss efforts to develop programming that supports Wisconsin farm carbon management initiatives. Wisconsin Legislative leadership with contributions across the stakeholder spectrum have recently launched an investigation of a comprehensive Farm/Energy/Water/Carbon policy program. The essence of the project is to establish or expand voluntary\, market-driven options for animal agriculture operations’ to more effectively and aggressively manage their farm’s carbon footprint. Components of the project include carbon accounting\, electricity\, nutrient management\, building market-place for lower carbon inputs\, carbon offsets and carbon labeling. \n\n\n\nThis project promotes and supports measuring\, managing\, and monetizing the value of carbon at the farm. Valuing what’s already accomplished\, integrating assets and practices to reduce carbon intensity\, and add (sometimes significantly) to the bottom-line while addressing risks (compliance\, price\, and technical). Using Wisconsin animal enterprises as an initial “targeted” industry\, the program intends to demonstrate that by using off-the-shelf technology and proven practices\, farmers can move to optimize financial benefits from decreasing the carbon intensity of their products. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speakers\n\n\n\nTim Baye is a Professor of Business Development/Energy Finance & State Energy Specialist\, University of Wisconsin. His research and educational programs serve energy industry executives\, professionals\, and policy leaders. He has over 30 years of experience in industrial renewable energy projects and policy\, in education\, executive\, and advisory capacities. \n\n\n\nJessica Niekrasz has years of experience in biogas\, water quality\, and related fields\, as well as an understanding of the regulatory environment that exists today in Wisconsin. She helps companies and organizations connect with potential partners and decision makers to better understand the landscape and grow the business. She is the President of Clean Fuel Partners and the Principal at Clean Fuel Connects. Additionally\, Jessica is the Board Chair at the Wisconsin Biomass Energy Coalition\, a Community Board Member at Clean Lakes Alliance\, and a Board Member at RENEW Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nThis event will be held online via Zoom. The online talk is free and open to the public. A link to access the talk LIVE will be sent to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 Lecture Series\n\n\n\nClean Lakes 101 is a series of educational events open to the public and a great chance for residents to learn more about the science behind the issues that affect our lakes.
